About The Position

The City of Everett is seeking applications for the civil service examination for Entry-Level Firefighter Paramedic. This role involves general firefighting duties, including combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires, as well as providing paramedic-level emergency medical care in accordance with Snohomish County Prehospital Treatment Guidelines, Protocols and Procedures. Responsibilities include fire suppression and EMS activities, emergency medical response, and identification and treatment of life-threatening illness or injury. The work requires performing hazardous or stressful tasks under emergency conditions, applying special firefighting and technical paramedical skills, and dedicating time to training, inspections, and station/equipment maintenance. Field performance reviews are required.

Requirements

  • Requires high school diploma or equivalency.
  • Attainment of the age of 21 years by date of hire.
  • U.S. Citizenship, a lawful permanent resident, or deferred action for childhood arrivals recipients (DACA).
  • Excellent physical condition.
  • Possession of a current National Registry Paramedic (NRP) certification or Washington State Paramedic certification.
  • Graduate of a Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the EMS Professions (CoAEMSP) accredited Paramedic program and eligible for Washington State reciprocity.
  • Possession of a current CPAT.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire, a Washington State Driver License and maintain such license for the duration of employment.
  • Submission to a thorough background check; psychological, physical, and medical check; employment reference check; and verification of all applicable certifications.
  • Successful completion and maintenance of Emergency Vehicle Incident Prevention (EVIP) qualifications.
  • Newly hired employees must participate in, and successfully complete, the requirements of the Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee (JATC) program within 3 years of hire.
  • Ability and willingness to successfully complete the mandated course of instruction at the Everett Fire Department sponsored academy and subsequent department field training programs.
  • All new hire firefighters are required to participate in the Respiratory Protection Program.
  • Knowledge of fire suppression methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of emergency medical care methods and techniques.
  • Ability to cope with situations firmly, courteously, tactfully and with respect for the rights of all citizens while providing high quality customer service.

Responsibilities

  • Perform full Firefighter duties.
  • Respond to incidents of fire, explosions or hazardous materials and mitigate the problem.
  • Respond on medic unit, engine or ladder to life-threatening illnesses or injuries and provide EMS care.
  • Identify and treat illnesses and injuries, according to Snohomish County Protocols.
  • Operate a wide variety of fire equipment, including, but not limited to, fire engines, aerial ladders, aid units, ground ladders, hoses and nozzles.
  • Operate a wide variety of medical equipment, including, but not limited to cardiac defibrillator/monitor, ACLS protocol medications, intravenous needles and fluids, backboards, dressings, and splints.
  • Proficiently operate mobile and desktop computers to record and care for patients.
  • Participate in drills, simulated catastrophes, classes, or other learning/training exercises.
  • Participate in public relations activities to inform citizens of EMS and suppression program goals, objectives, and attributes.
  • Perform general maintenance work on Fire Department equipment and quarters.
  • Perform related work as required.
