About The Position

The Entertainment Department Head is responsible for leading a department, ensuring the smooth operation of a minimum of 10 shows per week. This role requires active participation in rehearsals and performances, with a keen eye for detail and the ability to troubleshoot and repair various set pieces, including painting, woodworking, and basic rigging. The department head must be adept at multitasking, adapting to changing show dynamics, and adjusting cues as needed. Effective communication is crucial for resolving issues promptly during shows. This position also involves creating and maintaining show-related paperwork, standard operating procedures, inventory, and maintenance logs, as well as overseeing the daily and long-term maintenance and construction of theatrical props. Responsibilities extend to repairs, presets, strikes, fabrication, and proper storage of props, ensuring a safe working environment and training subordinates. Collaboration with the Technical Manager on operating and capital budgets, as well as assisting in production evolution by working with designers, is also a key aspect of this role. The department head will also be involved in generating event estimates, coordinating expendable orders, supporting the head carpenter, and making recommendations for production improvements. Leading show changes, installations, and modifications, coordinating safety initiatives, and advancing performance dates by interpreting technical riders are also part of the duties. The role supervises load-in, set-up, sound checks, show performance, strike, and load-out, and works with the Technical Manager to minimize payroll expenditure. Coordination with multiple departments is essential to ensure seamless guest experiences. The position may perform other duties as assigned by the Technical Manager. Familiarity with AutoCad and Vector Works is preferred.

Requirements

  • IATSE 720 member who is “A” List
  • Prior production show experience, as head of department for at least 5 years.
  • Must be proficient in maintenance skills including but not limited to: carpentry, painting, adhesives, epoxies, crafting.
  • Ability to lead team in accomplishing department goals.
  • Able to work with the Technical Manager/ Technical Director
  • Able to work with multiple productions and crew troubleshoot operational show issues and clearly communicate needs/expectations with others.
  • Ability to maintain the prop department including scheduling work calls for general maintenance, making sure track sheets and training materials are up to date repair, work areas, and other maintenance duties as needed.
  • Willing to take work calls for rehearsals and other special events.
  • Able to work 6 days a week on a long-term basis.
  • Work varied shifts including weekends and holidays
  • Ability to lift 50lbs to shoulder height
  • High level of mobility, including regularly going up and downstairs and standing/moving for 90+ minute intervals
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, reach, kneel, twist, and grip items when necessary.
  • Must be comfortable with theatrical effects such as strobes, haze, low fog, and others as production requires.
  • Must be able to execute very quick prop sets with accuracy while working in a dim environment
  • Must be self-motivated and be able to get along with co-workers and work as a team.
  • Be able to analyze daily show changes and adapt track to the needs of the version of the show that evening.
  • Maintain flexibility in a dynamic show environment and demonstrate a willingness to support the team with changes
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment that may present stressful situations at times.
  • Must have good communication and analytical skills
  • OSHA 10 certification

Nice To Haves

  • Welding skills highly desirable but not required
  • Familiarity with AutoCad, Vector Works preferred

Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain proper show related paperwork, standard operating procedures, inventory, and maintenance logs
  • Responsible for the daily and long-term maintenance and construction of Theatrical props.
  • Responsibilities include, but are not limited to repairs, presets, strikes, fabrication, and proper storage of the props. Will be responsible and respectful of props provided by production and/or performers.
  • Responsible for creating and maintaining a safe working environment.
  • Train subordinates, providing each with knowledge, development and appropriate direction to perform their responsibilities.
  • Review show schedule and work with the Technical Manager to schedule staff accordingly.
  • Work with the Technical Manager on operating and capital budgets for the Props Department.
  • Aid in the evolution of the production(s) by working with designers to make changes to show flow and design as required.
  • Maintaining documentation of show cues, cue track, proper change over and storage
  • Training additional operators to maintain coverage for department.
  • Participate in all required safety, emergency rescue trainings, and corporate trainings as directed.
  • Help Technical Manager Generate event estimates for special events or ongoing resident shows based off predicted workload, load in/out scheduled schedules.
  • Coordinates the ordering of new expendables and tracks use of expendables to help predict ordering and budgetary needs.
  • Help support head carpenter for the repairs and maintenance of the venue and production items and coordination of ordering supplies.
  • Make recommendations to improve the production capabilities.
  • Lead show changes, installations, and modifications as needed.
  • Coordinate all safety, OSHA and risk management initiatives.
  • Work with Technical Manager advancing performance dates, interpreting technical riders and arranging for equipment to fulfill contract and rider requirements.
  • Supervises load-in, set-up, sound checks, show performance, strike, and load out.
  • Work with Technical Manager to implement plans to minimize payroll expenditure.
  • Coordinates with personnel from multiple departments to ensure seamless, exciting events for our guests.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Technical Manager.
