About The Position

The Enterprise Integration Solutions Architect provides advanced technical expertise in designing, governing, and implementing enterprise integration and interoperability solutions. The role evaluates complex business and technical requirements, develops cross-platform integration strategies, establishes architectural standards, and designs solutions for secure, efficient information exchange across enterprise applications, cloud technologies, APIs, and emerging digital platforms. It serves as a senior technical resource on complex interoperability, integration architecture, and emerging-technology initiatives while supporting the organization's long-term technology strategy.

The position leads technical architecture for Epic interoperability and integration, including solutions connecting Epic with clinical, operational, research, and digital health platforms. It designs, implements, and supports integrations using Epic technologies and healthcare interoperability standards, and leads architecture, implementation, administration, and support of healthcare integration platforms. The role also engages vendors and startups, develops or guides software prototypes and custom integration components, evaluates AI-enabled technologies, and provides operational support and senior escalation for complex production issues. Solutions must address security, privacy, compliance, reliability, and operational support requirements.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, information systems, information technology, healthcare informatics, or a related field.
• Minimum 8 years of experience in healthcare IT, software engineering, systems integration, interoperability, application development, or technology architecture.
• Demonstrated experience integrating third-party applications with Epic in a healthcare provider environment.
• Strong working knowledge of healthcare interoperability standards, including FHIR, HL7 v2 and v3, C-CDA, DICOM, and SMART on FHIR.
• Strong understanding of REST APIs, SOAP services, JSON, XML, API contracts, webhooks, and enterprise integration patterns.
• Experience with Epic technical ecosystem components such as Chronicles, Bridges, Interconnect, Care Everywhere, Clarity, or Epic FHIR services.
• Hands-on programming experience using Caché/InterSystems ObjectScript, Python, or a comparable programming language.
• Experience designing or developing custom web services, APIs, or enterprise integration components.
• Advanced knowledge of relational databases and strong SQL skills.
• Experience with PL/SQL, Transact-SQL, stored procedures, database functions, performance optimization, or comparable database programming.
• Experience engaging directly with vendors and evaluating vendor-proposed technical solutions.
• Experience facilitating technical discovery, architecture workshops, design reviews, and solution assessments.
• Experience designing solutions that handle confidential clinical, patient, or other regulated healthcare information.
• Ability to produce clear architecture diagrams, technical specifications, decision records, and implementation guidance.
• Experience presenting complex technical concepts to technical and nontechnical audiences.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and lead work across multiple technical and business teams.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, facilitation, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to learn new procedures, technologies, and protocols and adapt to changing priorities and work demands.

• One or more Epic technical certifications, such as Epic Chronicles, Epic Bridges, Epic Interconnect, Epic Clarity, or Epic Care Everywhere.
• InterSystems IRIS for Health or HealthShare Health Connect certification, or comparable healthcare integration engine certification.
• HL7- or FHIR-related certification.
• Epic application certification in a clinical or revenue cycle module, or equivalent experience supporting Epic clinical and revenue cycle workflows.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain enterprise integration architectures, standards, and design patterns that support interoperability across applications, platforms, and technologies.
• Evaluate complex business, operational, clinical, and technical requirements and translate them into scalable, secure integration and interoperability solutions.
• Design, architect, implement, and support solutions using APIs, cloud services, middleware, Epic technologies, and other integration platforms.
• Establish governance practices, technical standards, reusable integration patterns, and best practices for enterprise integration and interoperability.
• Lead technical architecture for Epic interoperability and integrations involving Epic and third-party applications.
• Design enterprise interoperability solutions connecting Epic with clinical, operational, research, and digital health platforms.
• Lead architecture, implementation, administration, and support of healthcare interoperability solutions using integration platforms such as InterSystems IRIS for Health, Rhapsody, and Corepoint.
• Lead technical planning for Epic upgrades, interface migrations, vendor implementations, and platform modernization initiatives.
• Provide technical consultation and architectural guidance for complex initiatives involving multiple systems, vendors, and technologies.
• Develop or guide prototypes, proofs of concept, web services, APIs, and custom integration components.
• Apply software engineering best practices for API design, security, testing, logging, exception handling, and source control.
• Develop and review complex SQL for data extraction, transformation, reconciliation, reporting, and troubleshooting.
• Lead technical discussions, architecture reviews, solution assessments, and workshops with vendors, startups, and implementation partners.
• Evaluate vendor products and proposed solutions for interoperability, scalability, security, operational supportability, and alignment with organizational standards; provide technical due diligence and build-versus-buy recommendations.
• Evaluate emerging AI, automation, and agentic technologies, and design or prototype AI-enabled solutions that integrate enterprise systems, APIs, workflows, and healthcare data.
• Partner with cybersecurity, infrastructure, clinical, business, security, and compliance stakeholders to incorporate security, privacy, and compliance requirements into solution designs and support responsible AI adoption.
• Participate in security reviews, risk assessments, and vendor evaluations, and ensure solutions meet HIPAA and other applicable requirements.
• Provide ongoing operational support for Epic interoperability technologies, including Epic Bridges interfaces, APIs, and integration engine platforms.
• Serve as a senior escalation point for complex production issues involving integrations, applications, databases, networks, and vendors; lead troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and remediation.
• Ensure solutions include appropriate monitoring, alerting, resiliency, disaster recovery, and operational support processes, and drive continuous improvement in reliability and performance.
• Facilitate technical reviews to ensure alignment with enterprise architecture standards, security requirements, and technology strategies.
• Maintain knowledge of industry trends, standards, and evolving technologies related to interoperability, integration architecture, cloud platforms, and digital innovation.
• Develop and maintain technical documentation, architecture diagrams, standards, governance artifacts, technical specifications, decision records, and implementation guidance.
• Mentor technical team members and engineers and promote best practices in enterprise integration and solution architecture.
• Adhere to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguard University assets; duties may be expanded as necessary.
