About The Position

The English Language Learner Language Assessor, under supervision of the Supervising Director of the Multilingual and Cultural Education Department, will assess ELL students for proficiency in English using the New York State Identification Test for English Language Learners (NYSITELL.) The Language Assessor will facilitate the initial interview with parents and students, using interpretation support as needed, and provide related orientation and information to all families during ENL intake appointments. The Language Assessor is expected to provide support throughout the registration process of newly arriving language learners.

Requirements

  • Excellent organizational, communication and facilitation skills
  • Prior demonstration of exemplary attendance is expected of any candidate for hire
  • Experience with building and maintaining culturally responsive learning environments that celebrate the diversity of the student population.
  • New York State ESOL PK-12 certification.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum five (5) years of ELL teaching experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Screens Home Language Surveys
  • Administers the New York State Identification Test for English Language Learners (NYSITELL), or other initial identification assessments to assess ELL students for fluency in English and primary language; collect data and monitor ELL student growth
  • Notifies parents/guardians of test results and language identification status of every ELL student as identified on Home Language Survey
  • Conducts assessment of eligibility in the ENL program
  • Ensure that parents/guardians receive written translation of essential information (documents provided to parents during the process of identifying, evaluating, and placing students)
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by the law, District policy, and administrative regulation
  • Assists with registration activities of all newly arrived English language learners in compliance with federal and state requirements
  • Coordinates parent information and orientation sessions
  • Facilitates frequent and effective home‐school-community communication
  • Coordinates interpreters as needed
  • Communicates effectively with community-based organizations, students, school personnel, and parents, and an ability to work cooperatively with others
  • Maintains and upgrades professional skills
  • Performs other job-related duties, as assigned by the Supervising Director of the Multilingual and Cultural Education Department
