About The Position

The English Learner (EL) Teacher will promote the learning and growth of English Learner students by providing high-quality instruction, authentic and meaningful student assessments, analyzing student data, and using data to improve instruction. The role involves continuously providing students with constructive feedback and refining learning objectives. The teacher will maintain instructional practices that establish high expectations, create a safe and effective learning environment, and demonstrate cultural proficiency. Additionally, the position requires effectively partnering with families, caregivers, community members, and organizations to promote learning, and maintaining an ethical, culturally proficient, skilled, and collaborative practice as a professional educator.

Requirements

  • Licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education as a Teacher in ESL/EL covering grades K-6
  • SEI endorsement for appropriate grades
  • Bachelor's or higher earned academic degree
  • Evidence of training in the following areas: Knowledge of second language learning, standards-based curriculum, alternative method of assessment
  • Familiarity with WIDA English Language Development Standards
  • Familiarity with Assessment of students in/for English Language Learner Program
  • Abilities: Technology Use – School System Data base, standard Microsoft and Google products and web-based sites.
  • Abilities: Learning Strategies — Selecting and using instructional methods and procedures appropriate for the situation.
  • Abilities: Written and Oral Comprehension and Expression — Read and understand information in writing and listen to and understand spoken information and ideas. Able to communicate information and ideas in speaking and writing so others will understand.
  • Abilities: Team Player— Being respectful as part of a team and displaying constructive, collaborative behaviors.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct and indirect instructional support to students.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the developmental and linguistic levels of students and their learning styles by providing differentiated learning experiences.
  • Develop and implement student plans with measurable goals and objectives based on English Learner student assessments.
  • Ensure compliance and maintain accurate and complete student records and prepare reports as required.
  • Provide instruction with measurable outcomes and challenging tasks that promote higher-order thinking skills.
  • Organize and analyze assessment results to determine progress and adjust practice.
  • Identify and/or implement appropriate differentiated interventions and enhancements for all students, including those with disabilities and English learners.
  • Share conclusions about student progress with colleagues and seek their feedback.
  • Provide descriptive feedback based on assessment results and engage students and families in constructive conversations about performance improvement.
  • Define high expectations for student work quality, perseverance, and effort.
  • Develop students' interpersonal, group, and communication skills and provide opportunities for group learning with diverse peers.
  • Anticipate and respond appropriately to conflicts or misunderstandings arising from differences in backgrounds, languages, and identities.
  • Seek out and apply ideas for improving practice from supervisors, colleagues, professional development, and other resources.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in developing standards-based units, examining student work, analyzing student performance, and planning interventions.
  • Demonstrate sound judgment reflecting integrity, honesty, fairness, and trustworthiness.
  • Protect student confidentiality appropriately.
  • Consistently fulfill professional responsibilities, including being timely and reliable with paperwork, duties, and assignments.
  • Demonstrate regular attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the building Principal, Director of EL, Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning or the Superintendent of Schools.
