About The Position

The English Language Center (ELC) is seeking an experienced and dedicated Faculty Director to provide leadership and strategic direction. This role involves teaching, professional service, and contributing to the academic and religious missions of the university. The Faculty Director will oversee operations, curriculum, assessment, and foster a collaborative environment while supporting student-centered scholarship and professional engagement.

Requirements

  • PhD or EdD in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, Language Education, or a closely related field from an accredited institution (degree must be completed by the start date).
  • Three to five years of experience directing a lab-based English Language program that trains university students in TESOL.
  • University-level teaching in TESOL or English language instruction.
  • Direct experience teaching adult English language learners in an intensive English program (IEP), ESL, or EFL setting.
  • Experience mentoring, supervising, and training pre-service and in-service English language teachers.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience.
  • Experience with curriculum development and evaluation and language assessment.
  • Familiarity with federal regulations governing intensive English Programs.
  • A record of student-centered scholarship and professional engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Teach at least one course annually in English language instruction or TESOL-related areas.
  • Support high-quality instruction across the ELC through observation, feedback, and mentoring of instructors.
  • Mentor student teachers, visiting faculty, and instructors in developing effective teaching practices.
  • Supervise practicum and internship experiences for undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Contribute to teacher training, orientation, and ongoing professional development.
  • Support course development and revision in alignment with program outcomes.
  • Provide leadership and strategic direction for the ELC, including long-term planning, policy development, program evaluation, and chairing the Executive Council.
  • Serve as the primary liaison to the Department Chair and represent the ELC to university leadership, Continuing Education, and external stakeholders.
  • Cultivate collaboration among the Associate Directors, Operations Manager, Office Manager, Student Services Advisor, and Programmer, honoring the autonomy and expertise of each.
  • Oversee operations, including admissions, immigration, and enrollment; align enrollment and fiscal strategy with institutional goals; and approve expenditures within delegated authority.
  • Provide leadership for and collaborate with the Associate Director of Curriculum and Instruction on curricular refinement, teacher hiring and assignments, instructional quality, and evaluation that informs training of BYU students teaching at the ELC.
  • Provide strategic oversight of assessment and technology in partnership with the Associate Director of Technology and Assessment, including training TESOL students in assessment practices and ensuring access to needed technological resources.
  • Support student advisement, office management, and mentor visiting faculty through training, professional development, exit planning, etc.
  • Participate in departmental meetings and committees and contribute to university service and initiatives as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with Linguistics faculty to support and vet research conducted at the ELC.
  • Serve on MA committees for theses, projects, and portfolios.
  • Co-author ELC-based research, with an emphasis on students serving as lead authors.
  • Engage in professional service within TESOL and applied linguistics communities.
  • Promote a collaborative, respectful, and inclusive environment consistent with the mission of the university.
