About The Position

The English Instructor is responsible for providing and sustaining an effective learning environment for every student through well-prepared classes, relevant assignments, fair and holistic assessment of learning, clear documentation and feedback on student progress, and support of academic success for all students. Faculty members must be available Monday through Friday. This position primarily supports students on campus and online. The English Instructor is a campus-based position and will be assigned to work at one of Pierce Mortuary Colleges' campuses, including Mid-America College of Funeral Service, Dallas Institute of Funeral Service, or Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service, based on institutional needs. Full-time English faculty are expected to teach a quarterly workload of 12 to 18 quarter credits per quarter, depending on enrollment, scheduling demands, and overall institutional needs. The English Instructor works under the guidance and supervision of the Academic Dean.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in English, English Education, Literature, Composition, or a closely related field from a regionally accredited college or university required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with students, staff, and community members from diverse backgrounds and commitment to a culturally diverse work environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of English composition, grammar, literature, research, and academic writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach effectively in both on-campus and online environments.
  • Qualifications and requirements will be commensurate with the candidate’s education and experience.

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Develops the syllabus for each assigned course based on Pierce Mortuary College criteria. The syllabus includes learning objectives expressed in behavioral terms.
  • Teaches the depth and scope of course materials as outlined in the syllabus and catalog and relates instruction to students' academic, professional, and career goals.
  • Prepares and grades examinations, written assignments, projects, and other assessments based upon course objectives and the published course schedule and returns all assignments in a timely manner.
  • Provides instruction in areas such as English composition, grammar, reading, research, literature, critical thinking, and written and oral communication, as assigned.
  • Provides instruction and feedback designed to strengthen students' academic writing, communication, research, and critical thinking skills.
  • Implements evaluation for outcomes assessment and achieve established results while maintaining college standards of student satisfaction.
  • Works creatively in all course sections taught to discourage students from withdrawal and maintain satisfactory retention.
  • Begins and ends each class at the designated times, providing a full period of instruction.
  • Provides tutorial assistance and academic advising to students when needed.
  • Provides appropriate academic support and intervention to students experiencing academic difficulties.
  • Maintains an inclusive, respectful, and supportive learning environment for students from diverse backgrounds and educational experiences.
  • While teaching on campus, leave the classroom or instructional area clean, organized, and ready for the next instructor.
  • Submits, at the designated time, final grades for all students on the class roster.
  • Accurately maintains attendance records in accordance with the Attendance Policy and maintains a separate record of attendance and grades that are clearly labeled and posted electronically at the end of the term.
  • Initiates outreach to students who are absent or disengaged using appropriate communication methods, documents outreach efforts, and reports pertinent academic concerns and student success information to the Academic Dean.
  • Maintains regular office hours and remains available to students for academic assistance and consultation.
  • Use appropriate educational technology and the College's learning management system to support on-campus and online instruction.
  • Attend faculty meetings, professional development, graduation, and other college events as required by the College.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
