About The Position

Build your career in one of Saskatchewan’s newest and most exciting industries - rare earth elements! Rare earth elements (REEs) power technologies such as electric vehicles, renewable energy, and advanced electronics. Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC) is at the forefront of building the REE industry right here in Saskatchewan and we’re looking for an Engineering Technologist to be part of building our cutting-edge REE Commercial Division. The Engineering Technologist supports the progression of REE technologies from applied research and development through scale-up and commercialization by assisting with equipment design and layouts, process documentation, fabrication, construction, commissioning activities, and operational improvements.

Requirements

  • Diploma in mechanical engineering technology, engineering design and drafting technology, or design and manufacturing technology (formerly CAD/CAM) with a minimum of 5 years of experience
  • Registered or ability to register with Technology Professionals Saskatchewan (TPS) as a Professional Technologist (P.Tech.)
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in team settings
  • Hands-on problem solver with strong attention to detail and mechanical aptitude for process equipment
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced commercial environment
  • Organized and adaptable, able to work independently with minimal supervision in both office and field settings
  • Must provide an original Criminal Record Check that is satisfactory to SRC prior to the commencement of any employment duties. The Criminal Record Check must have been executed within the preceding 30 days of receipt.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with AutoCAD, Inventor, Vault and Plant 3D is preferred
  • Experience working on capital projects involving process equipment is an asset
  • Knowledge of mechanical codes and standards for pressure vessels, mechanical structures, refrigeration and piping including ASME and CSA

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support across design reviews, procurement, inspections, setup, commissioning, operation, and troubleshooting, including day-to-day support to operators and project teams
  • Contribute to the design, prototyping, and scale-up of REE production equipment by translating lab and pilot results into practical layouts, drawings, and operational inputs
  • Prepare and modify engineering layouts and drawings using CAD (2D &3D modeling)
  • Provide support for preparation of P&IDs, PFDs, piping isometrics, and related technical documentation in accordance with standards
  • Support installation and commissioning through onsite measurements, equipment fit-ups, and field verification activities
  • Assist with procurement and documentation by preparing technical inputs, reviewing vendor drawings, and developing equipment specifications, operating procedures, and maintenance materials
  • Apply safety principles in all designs and collaborate cross-functionally to resolve issues, improve performance, and support continuous improvement and data-driven decision making
  • Model basic steel structures and detailed layouts for equipment, piping, cable routing, and HVAC systems
