About The Position

This is a full-time, temporary position for 12 months. The role involves collecting, maintaining, and analyzing data for the Industrial Waste Surcharge Program and Private Water Discharge Program. Responsibilities include collecting samples for laboratory analysis, inspecting facilities for compliance with the Sewers Bylaw, attending on-site meetings, interpreting technical drawings, investigating and conducting studies, preparing reports, and responding to complaints. The position also involves assisting with correspondence, billing, tracking data, and updating operational procedures. Additionally, the role requires operating and maintaining various mechanical, digital, analogue, and computerized equipment for monitoring tasks.

Requirements

  • Graduate in Civil, Chemical, Environmental or Earth Sciences Engineering Technology or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Experience in environmental monitoring/sampling field work and taking detailed field notes of observations and work performed.
  • Experience in computer software including Microsoft Excel, Word and Sample Data Management Systems (i.e. LIMS) and works management systems such as iPACS.
  • Must possess and be able to maintain a valid Province of Ontario "G" driver's licence and be eligible to qualify for a City's driver's permit.
  • Demonstrated Experience in preparation of data files, data summaries and generating graphical summaries.
  • Knowledge of water, wastewater and groundwater as well as its treatment systems.
  • Knowledge in the sampling of ground water, surface water, industrial, commercial and institutional.
  • Knowledge of groundwater and industrial wastewater generation.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and documents (e.g. plans and profiles, sewer drawings, specifications etc.).
  • Understanding of the principles and application of environmental monitoring theories, methods and practices.
  • Familiar with Toronto Municipal Code Chapter 681, Sewers.
  • Familiarity with relevant regulations, statutes, standards and practices (e.g. Occupational Health and Safety Act, Ministry of Environment Acts).
  • Basic analytical skills with the ability to perform manual and computerized mathematical calculations in an engineering environment.
  • Ability to work effectively with consultants, contractors, colleagues, and other City employees at all levels and members of the public.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, at all organizational levels.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize, organize.

Responsibilities

  • Collects, maintains and analyzes data relating to the Industrial Waste Surcharge Program and Private Water Discharge Program; obtains data as required from iPACS system, Grubbs statistical program and clients.
  • Collects samples entering a City Sewer system for analysis by a laboratory and inspects facility when field data shows non-compliance with the Sewers Bylaw; logs water samples into iPACS database/works management systems.
  • Attends on site meetings with contractors and conducts field inspections and evaluates condition of facilities and sites.
  • Reads and interprets technical and Sewer drawings in accordance with City standards, permits, applications, agreements, and safety regulations.
  • Investigates, researches, and conducts studies.
  • Collects and analyzes data and prepares reports; responds to complaints and inquiries
  • Assists Engineering Technologist Technician 1 with correspondence, billing, and tracking data
  • Assists with updates operational procedures and manuals for Industrial Waste Surcharge and Private Water Discharge Program areas.
  • Operates and maintain a variety of mechanical, digital, analogue, wireless computerized equipment and other equipment to perform monitoring tasks.
