About The Position

Northrop Grumman's Space Sector is seeking an Engineering Technician – Level 1 or Level 2 to join their collaborative teams in Promontory, UT. This role is crucial for missions of paramount importance, focusing on defining the art of the possible. The position is 100% onsite and requires the successful candidate to review and implement test plans, drawings, specifications, and planning for various development projects. Key skills include chemical handling, operation of specialized equipment and tooling, and the safe use of chemicals and explosives, with daily exposure to these materials. The role also involves implementing continuous improvement using 5S and Lean Manufacturing principles, utilizing standard computer skills, and demonstrating experience in the setup, fabrication, and troubleshooting of mechanical systems. The candidate must possess strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, be able to read technical manuals, learn software systems, and troubleshoot them independently. While some work is collaborative, much of the work will be performed independently, requiring self-starting abilities and a desire for continuous learning. The position operates on a 4/10 schedule with overtime as needed. The selected candidate will work with experienced technicians operating test equipment such as Instrons, pressure chambers, and ovens, and will be involved in the analysis of production and subscale propellants and ingredients. A high standard of operational discipline is expected to support clean, safe, and efficient operations. The role requires thriving in a fast-paced environment with high expectations, diverse assignments, and collaborative settings. The position reports daily to the Propulsion Systems location near Corinne, UT, with potential for some domestic travel. No work-from-home options are available. Responsibilities include fabricating inert and energetic samples, interpreting technical drawings and procedures, performing processes under direction, maintaining accurate records, wearing personal protective equipment, and hosting a monthly 'energetics demo' for employee training. Other duties may be assigned.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent and 0-2 years additional education and/or related experience (for Level 1).
  • High School diploma or equivalent and 2 years additional education and/or related experience (for Level 2).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Secret security clearance.
  • Ability to qualify for an Alcohol Tobacco and Firearm (ATF) “Explosives Possessor” designation.
  • Ability to qualify for a Department of Defense security clearance.
  • Disciplined to follow detailed instructions and comply with procedures.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills to create clear and understandable documentation.
  • Computer skills in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and database applications.
  • Ability to learn and troubleshoot new software programs.
  • Ability to work well in a team and independently.
  • Strong working knowledge and experience in majority of the following areas: chemical handling, operation of specialized operating equipment and tooling, handling operation and safe use of various chemicals and explosives.
  • Experience in set-up, fabrication, and troubleshooting of mechanical systems.
  • Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to learn software systems and a working knowledge to troubleshoot systems those systems independently.

  • Ability to work a physically demanding day (stand for long periods; work from your knees; ascend and descend ladders; lift, bend, twist push and pull up to 50 lbs.) while wearing protective equipment (respirator, coveralls, gloves, eye and ear protection, etc.).
  • Willing to perform shift work, weekends, holidays and overtime as required.
  • Possess a valid state driver’s license.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred associate degree in a technical field (for Level 2).
  • Strong technical background in mechanics, electronics, or industrial machinery is a plus (for Level 2).
  • Preferred experience working with mechanical property testing equipment including Instron and MTS systems.
  • Able to obtain an Employee Possessor designation.

Responsibilities

  • Review and implement test plans, drawings, specifications and planning in support of various development projects.
  • Handle chemicals and operate specialized operating equipment and tooling.

  • Operate test equipment including Instrons, pressure chambers, ovens, energetic safety testing equipment, and various other equipment.
  • Perform analysis of production and subscale propellants and ingredients.
  • Maintain a high standard of operational discipline to support clean, safe, and efficient operations.
  • Fabricate both inert and energetic samples in accordance with specific detailed instructions.
  • Read, interpret and implement technical drawings, specifications, and procedures.
  • Perform processes under the direction of a principle technician following written instruction to exact specifications.
  • Maintain neat and accurate records.
  • Wear personal protective equipment that includes but is not limited to smocks, coveralls, safety glasses, safety shoes and respirators.
  • Host and demonstrate a monthly ‘energetics demo’ that is part of all EP employees training.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
