About The Position

The Asset Management division of Hennepin County's Transportation Operation department is seeking an Engineering Technician to work as part of a team to deliver maintenance projects with opportunities for technical growth through training and working with other experienced professionals. This role encompasses a blend of fieldwork and office-based tasks. You’ll be conducting thorough inspections of drainage structures and pavement conditions. Additionally, your duties will focus on plan production, data input and tracking pavement treatment performances. Requirements

  • Three years or more of experience in technical non-professional highway, land survey, geographic information systems application, or related engineering work.
  • Three years or more of college or technical school credits in a related engineering or computer science field.
  • Current certification as a Certified Survey Technician (CST), Level 2.
  • Note: College or technical school credits in a related engineering or computer science field may be substituted for experience.
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit.
  • Ability to lift items weighing up to 60 pounds; climb up and down slopes; work outdoors, and around traffic in all weather conditions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification(s) from the MnDOT Technical Certification Program.
  • Experience using computer software programs such as Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Bluebeam, AutoCAD, and/or MicroStation.
  • Experience in Engineering design, survey, permitting processes, and inspection work.
  • Experience working with terrain surface and/or roadway geometric design using roadway design software.
  • Experience with reading and interpreting MnDOT standard design manuals and technical memos, construction plans, specifications, and other written forms.
  • Knowledge of math functions such as arithmetic, algebra, and geometry.
  • Knowledge of utilizing computer software, such as CAD (OpenRoads, InRoads, Geopak, Civil 3D or equivalent), GIS, spreadsheets, or databases.
  • Knowledge of construction equipment, materials, and methods.
  • Ability to communicate with staff at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to schedule, prioritize, and balance several tasks/projects.

Responsibilities

  • Read, interpret and understand construction plans and technical specifications.
  • Observe construction activities for compliance with the project plans and specifications.
  • Assist in asset inspection, data collection and documentation in the field.
  • Prepare plan sheets and verify item quantities.
  • Conduct inspections for culverts, curb, and pavement by collecting field data and documenting in ArcGIS, ICON (Infrastructure Consultant) and ATOM (Computerized Maintenance Management System).
  • Direct, train, and check the work of technicians in lower level classifications.
