About The Position

This position is to assist professional engineers and/or higher level technicians in the performance of materials testing in the District 04 Laboratory. The technician performs and maintains a wide range of materials testing and laboratory equipment across soil, asphalt, aggregate, concrete, and field operations. They enter and retrieve testing data using MATT or SM Materials, coordinate with Project and Area Engineer offices to verify project finals, sampling plans, and Federal Independent Assurance testing requirements, and assist with field activities such as drill rig operations and roadway core collection. The technician also attends required training, provides training and assistance to less experienced staff, performs additional duties as directed, and may support emergency or disaster operations. The incumbent must be self-motivated and able to perform duties many times with or without direct supervision and be knowledgeable enough to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise. This position also requires the incumbent to make minor repairs and perform necessary maintenance on equipment and vehicles used to perform this task.

Requirements

Possession of a high school diploma or GED; OR Six months of experience in sub-professional engineering, heavy mobile equipment operation, or mobile equipment maintenance.

Responsibilities

Actively participates in daily materials testing, including knowing all testing procedures in each lab section (soil, asphalt, aggregate, concrete, and field operations).
Retrains and performs tests as needed in any/all sections of the lab.
Uses and regularly maintains any/all equipment in the lab.
Enters testing reports into the appropriate computer program (MATT or SM Materials) and recalls information as requested.
Performs field work on the drill rig, collecting roadway cores from contractors, and any other task around the lab as directed by a supervisor.
Coordinates with Area Engineers or Project Engineers for certain tasks.
May be required to be involved in Emergency/Disaster support.
Coordinates with the Project Engineer's office to verify 2059 project finals.
Verifies sampling plans submitted by the Project Engineer’s office.
Coordinates with the Project Engineer's office on the Federal Independent Assurance Program to determine the needed sampling and testing requirements.
Attends required training classes and receives on-the-job training in testing procedures.
May provide training or assistance to new or lower-level technicians.
Makes minor repairs and performs necessary maintenance on equipment and vehicles.
