About The Position

This role involves reviewing and managing traffic data, ensuring the quality and compliance of equipment performance with contractual specifications. The technician will identify stations requiring maintenance and assist the Contract Administrator with daily activities. Key contributions include analyzing traffic data, processing study data, making decisions on data acceptance, researching rejected data, and preparing reports. The role also entails collecting traffic data, performing maintenance, testing, and calibrating monitoring equipment, communicating with VDOT staff and external contacts, resolving issues proactively, and projecting a positive VDOT image. Additionally, the position involves contract administration, monitoring inspections, reviewing work payments, gathering schedules, and coordinating site maintenance. Data analysis from continuous count stations and sensor data is crucial, along with managing electronic records and performing quality assurance. The role applies engineering technology principles, interprets policies, and maintains project documentation and accurate records.

Requirements

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

  • Knowledge of traffic engineering principles and traffic data collection and analysis techniques.

  • Ability to analyze data and draw logical conclusions based on analysis.
  • Ability to analyze data and use available resources and tools to determine the need for maintenance ensuring equipment is returned in proper operational status.
  • Skill in the use of computers, microcomputers, and various software packages.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze traffic data: Process traffic study data using laptop computers and traffic software.
  • Analyze and make decisions regarding acceptance or rejection of the traffic study.
  • Research rejected data to determine cause and take corrective action.
  • Prepare written and oral reports detailing study data and analysis results.
  • Collection of traffic data: Perform maintenance, as well as test and calibrate traffic monitoring equipment used in traffic studies.
  • Communicate with VDOT staff as well as external contacts and consultants.
  • Proactively resolve issues at the lowest level.
  • Project a positive VDOT image.
  • Keep supervisor advised of important development and field observations.
  • Contract Administration: Monitor contract inspections.
  • Conduct traffic monitoring contractor inspections for short term traffic collections.
  • Review work payments based on contractual documents, specifications, and performance.
  • Gather milling and paving schedules.
  • Work with Contract Administrator to ensure site maintenance needs are coordinated and completed.
  • Data Analysis: Compile, process and analyze traffic data from continuous count stations produced by non-intrusive and in-road sensors.
  • Manage electronic records and files.
  • Perform file data quality assurance and quality control.
  • Engineering Technology: Apply principles and practices of engineering technology to assigned program areas.
  • Interpret policies and procedures and apply in daily work assignments.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Perform maintenance, as well as test and calibrate traffic monitoring equipment used in traffic studies.
  • Project Documentation: Prepare and maintain daily documentation of project activities.
  • Ensure documentation is submitted and is completed.
  • Avoid project delays and solve project related matters.
  • Recordkeeping: Maintains accurate records for all project activities.
  • Enters and updates data to meet required deadlines and requirements.
  • Interprets and applies relevant policies and procedures.
