About The Position

This position reports to the District Engineer for the District 2 office in Nash County. This is an Engineering Technician III level that will serve as the lead project inspector and will support higher level engineers in the administration of medium to large highway construction projects. Monitors daily progress of projects and resolves constructability issues to maintain project schedules. Direct and schedule the work of technicians in staking out and inspecting every phase of a construction project to ensure it is built according to plans and specifications in a timely and cost-effective manner. Manages all aspects of assigned construction projects with limited supervision from higher level engineers. May supervise and train multiple technicians, including Department employees and contract construction inspectors. The selected applicant for this position must have the ability to take notes and good communication skills. Ability to supervise the activities of lower-level employees and instruct them in proper work methods. The selected applicant will maintain project dairies on a daily basis including correspondence with contractors. Employee will perform both office and field duties. Project may last for several months or longer. May be subject to a wide range of hazards such as rough or uneven terrain and/or work adverse weather conditions to include heat or cold. Employee will be on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. May be required to work nights or weekends. Steel toe shoes are required. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Requirements

  • Ability to take notes.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Ability to supervise the activities of lower-level employees and instruct them in proper work methods.
  • Associate’s degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Steel toe shoes are required.

  • Customer service experience related to resolving problems that involve explaining complicated engineering concepts to various customer groups.

  • Experience working in a team environment to complete assignments.
