Engineering Technician II - Construction Inspection

About The Position

The City of Topeka’s Public Works department is seeking an Engineering Technician II to join its Engineering team. This is a technical position focused on construction inspection, construction surveying, interpreting plans and specifications, documenting construction activities, and other related engineering work. The primary work hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., though hours may vary depending on department needs. The role involves inspecting construction work and performing materials testing in both field and laboratory settings.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
At least three years of related experience in construction or the construction inspection field.
Possess and maintain a valid Kansas driver's license and meet the City's insurability requirements.
Obtain within one year of employment an ACI Level I certification, Nuclear Gauge Safety Certification, and Work Zone Safety or Traffic Control Management equivalent certification.
Familiarity with construction principles and practices, construction materials, and tools and equipment common to the construction industry.
Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in an organized manner.
Ability to work in a mobile work environment.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Responsibilities

Inspect new construction, renovation, and repair work for quality, materials, and workmanship.
Prepare and maintain construction progress reports and material testing documentation.
Read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, maps, legal descriptions, and exhibits.
Perform soil, concrete, asphalt, utility, and other materials testing in field and laboratory settings.
Conduct construction surveying and document construction activities.
