About The Position

This position is for an Engineering Technician (Civil) in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District. The position may be filled at the GS-07, GS-08, or GS-09 grade levels. Duties include establishing, collecting, editing, and processing hydrographic survey data for various types of surveys using HYPACK and associated software. This involves collecting and editing multibeam data, processing data for engineering computations, serving as a field specialist on survey systems, developing products from data using CADD, and preparing survey reports. The role requires a commitment to improving federal government efficiency, upholding the ideals of the American republic, the rule of law, and the Constitution.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must possess a valid State motor vehicle operator's license for the class of vehicle being operated based on site-specific, job-related requirements, and must maintain this license.
  • Employee must possess (or be able to obtain within 6 months of assignment), appropriate Corps of Engineer boat operator's license in order to operate various boats and/or survey vessels and must maintain this license.

  • GS-07 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal Service, which includes participating in hydrographic surveys to collect data; operating hydrographic survey systems; post-processing hydrographic survey data; and assisting with specifying data needs corresponding with study objectives.
  • GS-07 Education: one full year of graduate level education in an appropriate field of engineering, construction, industrial technology, or related field.
  • GS-07 Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.
  • GS-08 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal Service, which includes conducting hydrographic surveys while collecting data and post-processing with minimal oversight; independently operating a range of hydrographic survey systems; performing quality assurance checks on survey data; and assisting in preparation of survey plans.
  • GS-09 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-08 grade level in the Federal Service, which includes leading hydrographic survey collection and post-processing of data; operating and troubleshooting hydrographic survey equipment; tracking and performing maintenance and equipment repairs; and providing quality assurance and evaluation of survey data providing guidance to lower graded employees.
  • GS-09 Education: Master's or equivalent degree or have completed two full years of graduate level education leading to such a degree in an appropriate field of engineering, construction, or industrial technology.
  • GS-09 Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.
  • Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent.
  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
  • You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship.
  • This position requires a 1 year probationary period during which the agency evaluates your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest.
  • Direct Deposit of Pay is required.

Responsibilities

  • Establishing, collecting, editing, and processing hydrographic survey data for condition, pre-/ post-dredge surveys, post-flood surveys, engineering surveys, and scour surveys using HYPACK and associated survey software.
  • Collecting and editing multibeam data using survey vessels to assure accuracy by performing appropriate overlap checks and comparisons following standardized software processes of quality assurance.
  • Processing hydrographic survey data to establish and compute parameters for use in making engineering computations for yardage estimates, shoaling rates, and cross-sections.
  • Serving as a field specialist on hardware and software systems used to conduct hydrographic surveys.
  • Developing products from processed survey data using Computer-Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) and similar software programs.
  • Preparing survey reports documenting technical results of study/investigation, providing technical evaluation to team members.
