About The Position

The Walters Art Museum is seeking an Engineering Supervisor to oversee the day-to-day operations of the museum’s Engineering Department. This role involves supervising engineering staff, managing the preventive maintenance program, operating building systems, and ensuring compliance with life-safety and equipment inspection requirements. The position is on-call and requires participation in the department's on-call rotation.

Requirements

Five (5) or more years of progressively responsible experience in building maintenance and engineering operations.
At least two (2) years of supervisory or team leadership experience, including scheduling, coaching, and performance management.
Demonstrated experience operating and maintaining HVAC systems, central plant equipment, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and building automation systems.
Experience coordinating preventive maintenance programs.
Working knowledge of life-safety systems, including fire alarm, fire suppression, clean-agent suppression, fire pumps, sprinklers, and portable fire extinguishers.
Experience coordinating regulatory inspections, testing, corrective actions, and documentation for building systems and equipment.
Experience managing contractors and service providers, including scheduling work, reviewing reports, and ensuring quality and safety standards are met.
Ability to troubleshoot building systems, prioritize multiple competing demands, and make sound operational decisions during normal operations and emergencies.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to maintain accurate records, schedules, inspection documentation, and compliance files.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments and communicate technical information to non-technical staff.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and Teams.
Universal Refrigeration Certification required.
Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Demonstrated knowledge of HVAC, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and building systems commonly found in commercial or institutional facilities.
Working knowledge of applicable OSHA safety requirements and safe work practices, including lockout/tagout, electrical safety, ladder safety, confined space awareness, and personal protective equipment.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical manuals, schematics, and equipment documentation.
Ability to respond to after-hours emergencies and participate in the department's on-call rotation.
Ability to work occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays as operational needs require.
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, access mechanical spaces, and work in varying environmental conditions, including rooftops, mechanical rooms, and confined areas.
All employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. The museum does not sponsor work visas.

Nice To Haves

Experience with Johnson Controls Metasys or similar building automation systems is preferred.
Associate’s degree or technical training in HVAC, building engineering, industrial maintenance, facilities management, or a related field preferred.
Experience working in museums, historic buildings, healthcare facilities, laboratories, or other environments with strict environmental and life-safety requirements preferred.

Responsibilities

Directly supervise the Engineer and Engineering Assistant, assigning daily work, establishing priorities, and managing schedules and coverage.
Manage employee performance, including coaching, training, setting annual goals, and conducting performance evaluations.
Oversee attendance, leave requests, overtime, and shift coverage, ensuring staff adherence to museum policies, safety procedures, and operating practices.
Coordinate engineering activities with other museum departments such as Facilities, Security, Operations, and Conservation.
Coordinate the museum-wide preventive and corrective maintenance program for building systems and equipment.
Develop, assign, schedule, track, and document work using the computerized maintenance management system.
Maintain accurate equipment records, maintenance histories, inspection reports, and related documentation.
Monitor HVAC, central plant, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and other building systems via the Johnson Controls Metasys building automation system.
Respond to equipment alarms, failures, leaks, comfort complaints, and other building-related issues.
Perform or direct minor repairs and coordinate specialized services with qualified contractors.
Coordinate planned shutdowns, equipment testing, contractor access, and system restoration.
Escalate major failures, life-safety concerns, regulatory issues, and significant operational risks to the Senior Engineering and Facilities Manager.
Participate in and administer the Engineering Department’s on-call rotation, maintaining the schedule and arranging coverage.
Respond to after-hours calls for alarms, equipment failures, leaks, weather events, and other building emergencies.
Determine the appropriate response for emergencies, whether remote, employee, contractor, or emergency-service.
Maintain current emergency contacts and escalation procedures.
Coordinate inspection, testing, preventive maintenance, repairs, documentation, and regulatory compliance for building and life-safety systems (fire alarm, fire suppression, elevators, boilers, etc.).
Schedule required state, third-party, and contractor inspections and services.
Maintain permits, certificates, inspection reports, service records, and system documentation.
Track deficiencies and coordinate corrective actions.
Monitor inspection and certificate expiration dates to ensure compliance.
Coordinate contractor work, providing access, system information, and museum-specific instructions.
Monitor contractor work for quality, completeness, safety, and protection of museum spaces and collections.
Review service reports, proposals, invoices, and contractor recommendations.
Promote safe work practices and ensure staff use required personal protective equipment.
Support compliance with safety procedures (lockout/tagout, electrical safety, ladder safety, confined-space, chemical-handling).
Report unsafe conditions and coordinate corrective action.
Prepare reports on preventive maintenance, outstanding work, equipment conditions, and inspection deficiencies.
Maintain inventories of filters, critical parts, tools, supplies, and emergency materials.
Participate in departmental, project-planning, and coordination meetings.
Perform other duties related to the operation, maintenance, safety, and preservation of the museum’s buildings and systems.
