Employee will serve as an Engineering Supervisor II with a small group of engineers and technicians engaged in project management, engineering coordination, computer-aided design, construction plan production, estimating, surveying, contract administration and technical support for Division-managed transportation improvement projects. This position will also be responsible for coordinating with other NCDOT units, private engineering firms, property owners, local officials, utility owners, regulatory agencies, construction contractors, and the general public. Employee shall have the ability to provide technical guidance to engineering staff and private engineering firms as well as the ability to oversee and develop all aspects of design to ensure that quality deliverables are produced in accordance with applicable policies and procedures and that right of way and letting schedules are met. Additional Expectations: This position requires effective written and oral communication, a reasonable level of familiarity with the organization of the Department, and the ability to lead and train members of the unit. The ability to work outside in various types of weather, to traverse various types of terrain, and to work at times outside of normal working hours (on a limited basis) is essential. The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others is also required. Design duties include project scoping, determination of design criteria, planning, survey coordination, computer-aided roadway design, construction plan production, and estimating. This would also include the review of work performed by others within the unit or by private engineering firms and providing guidance as needed. Experience with NCDOT design guidelines and engineering software applications is essential. Project management duties also include tracking project schedule milestones and project funding balances and the administration of purchase orders for professional services. Supervisory duties include performance management, training and development, workload planning and task assignments, and hiring.

  • Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and four (4) years of progressively responsible experience including two (2) years of supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
