About The Position

This position reports to the District Engineer in the District 2 Office in Mecklenburg County. Candidate should have considerable knowledge of the principals and practices of Civil Engineering and highway maintenance methods, techniques and the use and operation of field and office engineering instruments. This position supervises subordinate employees, conducts and coordinates reviews of technical plans and drawings relating to driveway permit applications, utility encroachment requests, subdivision design standards, and road addition packages. This position conducts and coordinates preconstruction meetings and onsite inspection of all construction activities within the ROW conducted by private developers, utility owners and NCDOT contractors. Effectively communicate with co-workers, departmental personnel, contractors, local and state officials and the general public. The selected candidate should have the ability to understand, explain and administer project assignments, have the ability to interpret plans provisions, specifications, policies, procedures and regulations, ability to plan, organize and schedule highway maintenance operations and the ability to make independent decisions. The selected candidate will be expected to have working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures. This position is required to work nights and weekends as needed for emergency and planned operations in all types of weather conditions and on uneven surfaces and slopes.

Requirements

  • Considerable knowledge of the principals and practices of Civil Engineering and highway maintenance methods, techniques and the use and operation of field and office engineering instruments
  • Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures
  • Ability to work nights and weekends as needed for emergency and planned operations in all types of weather conditions and on uneven surfaces and slopes
  • Associate’s degree in an applicable area of engineering technology from an appropriately accredited institution and six years of progressive technician experience; or High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and eight years of progressive technician experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
