About The Position

We are seeking two (2) Engineering Project Managers to serve as key agents for the Transportation Delivery Section! As an Engineering Project Manager in Transportation Delivery, you will manage the development of detailed designs, tender preparation, and contract management for the delivery of Transportation Infrastructure in Edmonton. The positions will require management of engineering consultants as well as internal administrative and technical project management staff. The role will involve taking preliminary designs through detailed design and procurement for the delivery of minor to major transportation projects. The position will also manage high profile projects (excess of $5 to $20M) with emphasis on urban transportation design. Typical projects that can be expected include small to medium bridge rehabilitations or replacements, arterial and collector road construction, streetscaping, active mode infrastructure, and special projects. This position will also require working with and mentoring staff on various lower profile projects (under $5M). You will be accountable for the successful delivery of assigned projects, owning the responsibility for every deliverable, objective, and outcome through collaboration and proactive problem-solving. Working within an integrated business model, you will monitor and manage risk, provide professional written and verbal public communication, and apply engineering expertise—including constructability, risk assessment, and value engineering—to identify and resolve complex technical issues throughout the project lifecycle.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or related field of Transportation Engineering
  • Must be a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in good standing and registered with APEGA. Applicants in a different Canadian jurisdiction eligible for Inter-Provincial Mobility (IPMA) with APEGA may be considered. Registration with APEGA must be obtained prior to commencement of employment
  • Minimum of 4 years of progressively responsible experience, combining engineering and project management expertise in a related transportation or other civil engineering field
  • Demonstrated technical proficiency in construction processes related to civil, structural, environmental, or landscaping disciplines
  • Expertise in project management methods and techniques (PMBOK best practices), coupled with proven planning, organizational, and problem-solving abilities, including experience leading multi-disciplinary teams
  • Effective conflict resolution, negotiation, verbal, and written communication skills, alongside experience developing and implementing public engagement processes and a willingness to collaborate
  • Working knowledge of relevant codes, legislation, regulations, policies, and procedures (OH&S, Environmental, Builders Lien Act, etc.), and experience managing external consultants with the ability to delegate and empower staff

Responsibilities

  • Manage the detailed design, procurement, and delivery of transportation or related infrastructure projects using best practices in project management PMBOK principles
  • Define project goals, objectives, and planned deliverables to fulfill the requirements of Business Partners and Project Sponsors
  • Manage, monitor, and report project milestones through detailed plans and schedules, ensuring projects remain on budget, on schedule, and within the defined scope and quality
  • Lead multi-disciplinary teams consisting of consultants, contractors, clients, and business partners, while establishing and exemplifying the desired team culture
  • Develop and implement robust public/partners engagement processes and communication plans in collaboration with Communications & Engagement (C&E)
  • Apply expert technical engineering knowledge to anticipate, identify, and resolve complex issues, including overseeing or performing in-field design and re-design
  • Review and prepare critical project documentation such as feasibility studies, design reports, tenders, drawings, and specifications
  • Manage the procurement and contract processes, including preparing tender documents, writing specifications, reviewing proposals/bids, making acceptance recommendations, and administering the work of consultants and contractors
  • Perform all activities related to thorough risk management for projects and steward necessary relationships to support project success
  • Handle project closing activities, such as obtaining sign-off, conducting post-project evaluations, capturing lessons learned, and managing the resolution of issues and deficiencies during the warranty phase
