About The Position

The Engineering Program Manager Intern will support Apple’s Hardware Test Engineering (HWTE) program management team in improving design package quality, process efficiency, and operational visibility across its test equipment ecosystem. The role works with engineering subject matter experts and program leads, as well as hardware, software, operations, and equipment suppliers, to improve equipment delivery and support data-driven decisions. The intern will audit and help standardize engineering documentation, analyze fixture-development workflows and Apple-supplier handoffs, and help track supplier readiness and organize design-review feedback. The role also supports consolidating engineering trackers into structured datasets, piloting AI-assisted design-review or telemetry tools, and preparing data-driven summaries and recommendations for HWTE leadership. Travel to manufacturing and vendor sites in China, and potentially internationally, may reach up to 50% to support engineering reviews, documentation audits, and station bring-up. This is a full-time, six-month internship in Shanghai, China. Applicants must be enrolled in a relevant technical degree program and graduating within 0–6 months from the conclusion of the internship.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD program in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Systems Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Engineering Management, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field; graduating within 0–6 months from the conclusion of the internship.
  • Available to complete a full-time, six-month internship in Shanghai, China.
  • Able to read technical drawings, including 2D/3D CAD, parse engineering specifications, and quickly learn electro-mechanical system architectures.
  • Practical experience using modern AI/ML productivity tools, data automation, scripting such as Python, or dashboarding to structure and analyze engineering data.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail in auditing technical documentation and mapping workflows.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in both English and Mandarin.
  • Proactive, structured problem solver able to work effectively with cross-functional subject matter experts and create clarity from ambiguity.
  • Strong multitasking and technical program coordination skills.
  • Willingness to travel domestically in China, and potentially internationally, up to 50%.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior internship, academic research, or project experience in hardware manufacturing, automated test equipment, robotics, or factory automation environments.
  • Exposure to test station architecture, including fixtures, nests, sensors, pneumatics, and controls; design for manufacturing (DFM); or geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Familiarity with design-review processes, CAD package auditing, or developing scoring rubrics or automated checklists for technical documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Audit, score, and help standardize China-originated engineering documentation, including CAD packages, 2D drawings, critical dimensions, GD&T, and specifications, against engineering rubrics.
  • Map and analyze fixture-development workflows and Apple-supplier handoffs to identify schedule friction, review delays, and process optimization opportunities.
  • Assist engineering subject matter experts in tracking supplier technical readiness, organizing design-review feedback, and aligning vendor deliverables with Apple test station architecture and integration requirements.
  • Help consolidate scattered trackers into structured datasets.
  • Support pilots of AI-assisted design-review or telemetry tools.
  • Prepare data-driven summaries and recommendations for HWTE leadership.
  • Travel to manufacturing and vendor sites to support engineering reviews, documentation audits, and station bring-up.
