About The Position

The mission of Maintenance & Operations is to provide excellence in transportation by keeping the state's road transportation network in a state of good repair through the careful and consistent application of personnel, equipment and financial resources. This position primarily involves field surveying, field calculations, maintenance of equipment, computer aided drafting, GIS mapping and analyzing and reviewing field data. Additional duties may include design work, construction inspection, checking inspector books, and preparing estimates, notes, and maps for various types of construction projects. This position must be available to work overtime as needed, and during storm events and other emergency events on short notice and in some cases no advance notice. Upon satisfactory completion of department promotional standards and job requirements, employees may be eligible to be promoted to the next level.

Requirements

  • Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas: Engineering Support Survey: Knowledge of applied mathematical computations including algebra, geometry and trigonometry.
  • Knowledge of interpreting construction plans and details, schematics or technical drawings.
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
  • Six months experience in applied mathematical computations including algebra, geometry and trigonometry.
  • Six months experience in interpreting construction plans and details, schematics or technical drawings.
  • Six months experience in interpreting boundary plats.
  • Knowledge of surveying which includes collecting survey data for boundary, mapping, topographic, hydrographic, engineering, and construction surveys.
  • Knowledge of using and maintaining surveying tools and instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data.
  • Six months experience in surveying which includes collecting survey data for boundary, mapping, topographic, hydrographic, engineering, and construction surveys.
  • Six months experience in measuring existing field locations of dimensions or boundaries of land areas, coastal, pond and river depths and the precise positions of points, lines and grades.
  • Six months experience in using and maintaining surveying tools and instrumentation.
  • Six months experience in using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data.
  • Knowledge of developing analytical and technical documents such as reports, maps, or geographical representations of data.
  • Knowledge of developing and recommending plans, specifications, designs, studies or surveys.
  • Knowledge of project management which includes planning, developing, implementing, managing and evaluating projects to ensure objectives are met.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects infrastructures to ensure compliance with design plans, materials specifications, safety requirements, construction processes, local, state, and federal codes and on-going maintenance requirements; documents and reports compliance or deficiencies.
  • Designs, develops, or reviews engineering project or site layouts, alignments, profiles, studies, graphs, and other related activities.
  • Compiles and records notes, sketches, test results, inspection data, and other information to document compliance and/or develop designs, specifications, reports, maps, and other geographically based data.
  • Conducts various studies to be used by others to analyze needs or develop plans, record characteristics, and other related activities.
  • Conducts data analysis to determine accuracy of data collected, develop recommendations, develop corrective designs, and/or ensure compliance.
  • Tests or evaluates the quality of materials or designs to verify adherence to contracts and specifications.
  • Obtains survey data such as angles, elevations, points, and contours using electronic distance measuring equipment and other surveying instruments.
  • Calculates or measures area and volume dimensions, horizontal and vertical geometry, profile and component specifications, and material testing dimensions using calculators or computers.
  • Operates computer assisted drafting equipment or other tools of the trade, and uses automated information systems and computer software to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve, and report on data.
  • Reads and interprets plans, specification, blueprints, and other engineering documents.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
