About The Position

This Engineering/Physical Science Technician II position supports the testing of soils, concrete, aggregate, and other construction and maintenance materials used in transportation projects. The position helps ensure materials meet contract requirements and applicable standards by providing timely and accurate testing results. Primary responsibilities include processing samples, conducting assigned laboratory tests, and recording and reporting test results for aggregate and soil materials. The position works with minimal supervision and provides technical support that contributes to the development and maintenance of transportation projects throughout the region.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
  • Four (5) years of experience in any combination of the following: Project management, assisting in the design of construction plans, monitoring construction projects by conducting materials testing, project inspection and documentation.
  • Education from an accredited college or university with coursework in engineering, civil engineering technology, construction management, project management or other relevant coursework may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
  • College transcripts and/or Official NACES Report is required.
  • Experience in Project management, assisting in the design of construction plans, monitoring construction projects by conducting materials testing, project inspection, and documentation will be considered.
  • Must pass a pre-employment screening which may include social security number trace, criminal records check, public court records check, educational records, and driving records checks.
  • A current valid driver’s license is required for all Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) positions which require operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Process construction material samples submitted for laboratory testing; review samples to determine testing requirements and ensure sufficient material is available to complete required testing.
  • Perform testing of construction materials, including aggregate and soils, using applicable ASTM, AASHTO, Colorado, project, and contract requirements and procedures.
  • Review project specifications and determine the appropriate testing standards and procedures based on the material submitted and project requirements.
  • Evaluate testing requirements throughout the testing process to ensure work is completed in accordance with applicable standards and contract requirements.
  • Record testing information and results, enter laboratory test data into spreadsheets and ATser for Materials, assign laboratory test numbers, and prepare test reports for review.
  • Identify and communicate testing issues or deviations from specifications and standards and assist in addressing issues that may affect test results.
  • Maintain program testing data, sample submittal information, worksheets, databases, and other records used to track samples and test results.
  • Receive, review, identify, log, and track material samples throughout the testing process.
  • Perform regular maintenance, calibration, and checks of laboratory equipment and document maintenance and repairs in accordance with applicable requirements.
  • Assist with CCRL/AASHTO resource accreditation activities for the Soils Laboratory, including testing, documentation, calibration, and equipment checks.
  • Train and assist technicians, region testers, and project personnel in proper testing methods for soil, concrete, and physical properties; participate in training and certification activities as an instructor and/or proctor.
  • Assist with ACI/WAQTC certification programs and other Staff Materials training, and work with CDOT and industry partners as assigned.
  • Assist laboratory personnel with retrieving materials and picking up laboratory supplies.
  • Operate a forklift to load, unload, move, and store equipment, test samples, and supplies within the laboratory.
  • Perform other duties as assigned; a valid driver’s license may be required to perform certain job duties.
