Lead, Engineering Backup

About The Position

MongoDB is hiring an Engineering Manager to lead the Atlas Infinite Backup team, part of the Backup and Object Storage Services organization. The team owns the cloud object storage tier for Atlas Infinite, building systems for continuous backup, point-in-time recovery, retained snapshots, fast restores, disaster recovery, cold-data serving, and backup storage economics. Its work spans the storage engine’s write path, data layout, and lifecycle, as well as backup features and production operations across cells and regions. This is a hands-on leadership role managing six engineers working in Rust and Java on distributed storage systems. The manager will lead the roadmap across durability, recoverability, cost efficiency, and compliance; guide the team toward and beyond general availability; handle customer escalations; and partner with teams across storage, backup, billing, and product. The role also involves improving engineering practices and operational readiness, representing the team in planning and staffing, and balancing near-term deliverables with long-term architecture and operational investment. Early success includes building relationships with the team and partner organizations, taking over team ceremonies, planning, and on-call ownership, co-leading a project, and delivering an operational improvement. Within six to twelve months, the manager is expected to lead a cross-team initiative through production, deliver a multi-quarter project with measurable impact, and develop engineers for greater scope and leadership responsibilities.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years building, debugging, and operating distributed storage, database, or large-scale data infrastructure systems.
  • At least 2 years of direct engineering management experience, including hiring, performance management, and coaching across levels.
  • Strong proficiency in at least one compiled, statically typed language such as Rust, Java, C++, or Go.
  • Deep understanding of durability, consistency, and recovery tradeoffs.
  • Demonstrated customer focus, including experience working with demanding customers or support teams on complex incidents and turning findings into outcome-oriented recommendations.
  • Ability to develop people, including mentoring and promoting engineers, directly managing underperformance, and building high-engagement teams.
  • Ability to lead multi-quarter initiatives with multiple stakeholders and align teams through written documents covering design, scope, and tradeoffs.
  • Curious, collaborative, and intellectually honest.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with both Rust and Java.
  • Experience with snapshots, point-in-time recovery, log-structured storage, compaction, or cloud object storage such as S3, GCS, or Azure Blob.
  • Experience reasoning about storage costs per GB, data lifecycle, and how physical data layout affects customer billing.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, grow, and manage a team of six engineers working on distributed storage systems; set clear expectations and maintain high standards and sustainable execution.
  • Own the team's roadmap across durability, recoverability, cost efficiency, and compliance in partnership with organizational leadership and Product Management.
  • Drive the Atlas Infinite backup roadmap to and beyond general availability, defining requirements for disaster recovery, compliance, and backup economics and sequencing the work.
  • Manage customer escalations involving backup, restore, or backup cost; partner with Support, Atlas, and server teams to reproduce, diagnose, and resolve issues.
  • Partner with the WiredTiger storage engine team, Storage Layer Services teams, Atlas Backup, Atlas Billing, and Pricing & Packaging on cross-team features.
  • Improve engineering practices through design reviews, operational readiness, incident follow-through, and tooling for operating a large production footprint with a small team.
  • Represent the team in planning, staffing, and calibration, balancing near-term GA deliverables, long-term architecture, and operational investment.
  • Take ownership of team ceremonies, short-term planning, and on-call operations.
  • Co-lead projects and deliver process or operational improvements.
  • Lead cross-team initiatives in recoverability, disaster recovery, or backup cost efficiency through production, and deliver multi-quarter projects with clear impact.
  • Develop engineers for increased scope and future leadership roles.
