About The Position

Great Question is hiring an Engineering Manager to lead its Methods and Insights teams, reporting to the Director of Engineering. Methods powers studies and participant experiences, while Insights helps customers make sense of research data and act on it. The role combines people leadership, delivery and operational ownership, and improving the engineering systems that help teams and AI agents build reliable software quickly. The manager is responsible for hiring and staffing, regular one-on-ones, coaching, feedback, performance management, and engineer growth. They lead planning and sequencing, remove blockers, manage risk and stakeholder relationships, guide changes to engineering practices, and ensure committed work ships at a high quality. They also own the teams’ operational health after launch, including monitoring and red-teaming. The role includes hands-on technical leadership, but is not primarily feature development. The manager will help establish shared components, the agent harness, conventions, CI gates, developer experience, and important architectural decisions. They will partner with product managers, the Head of Product, and company founders to shape team priorities and turn product bets into shipped work. The position is remote-first and operates in an AI-native, async-heavy environment.

Requirements

  • Previous Engineering Manager experience; this must not be the candidate’s first management role.
  • Experience hiring, running performance cycles, and helping people grow into greater scope.
  • Technical strength at least at a solid senior-engineer level, including having built and operated production systems.
  • Strong system design skills and the ability to assess designs, estimates, and blockers.
  • Experience using an agentic coding harness such as Claude Code, Codex, or Cursor, with considered views on how teams can use agents to ship quickly without compromising quality.
  • Ability to turn ambiguous problems into a sensible sequence of work and apply only as much process as needed.
  • Strong people-management skills, including direct feedback and handling difficult performance and growth conversations.
  • Customer focus and concern for whether shipped work solves customer problems.
  • Clear written communication suited to a remote, async-heavy environment.
  • Comfort with ambiguity and changing priorities.
  • Willingness to stay involved in code, tools, and architecture while prioritizing people leadership.
