About The Position

Justworks is hiring an Engineering Manager for its Benefits organization. The organization builds products and experiences that help businesses provide and manage employee benefits, working across Health Benefits, Wealth Benefits, and International Benefits. Teams simplify complex processes, improve access to offerings, and create seamless experiences for employers and employees. Engineers partner with Product, Design, Operations, and external providers to deliver reliable, scalable solutions in a highly regulated space. The Engineering Manager will serve as a player-coach, helping build and oversee a team of software engineers. The role combines hands-on coding and technical leadership with project coordination, prioritization, and team development. The manager will work with engineering, design, and product partners to deliver features, shape the team’s long-term strategy and quarterly roadmap, and foster technical excellence, innovation, continuous learning, and empathy for internal stakeholders.

Requirements

At least 7 years of experience as a software engineer working on production web applications.
At least 1 year of experience managing a team of engineers.
Demonstrable experience prioritizing, crafting, and achieving plans.
Strong communication skills and the ability to grasp and explain complex concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
High levels of empathy and interpersonal skills.
Solid understanding of core web development technologies, including data structures, data stores, algorithms, distributed systems, and common patterns around these frameworks.

Responsibilities

Work with engineers, designers, and product managers to prioritize, schedule, and execute projects and ship new features.
Partner with Product to define and execute the team’s long-term strategy and quarterly roadmap, including setting goals and measuring progress and success.
Communicate and coordinate with teams inside and outside engineering to understand requirements and opportunities for improvement.
Mentor engineers and foster a culture of technical excellence, innovation, and continuous learning.
Provide technical and non-technical guidance to direct reports.
Attract, hire, develop, and retain a high-performing team of engineers.
Drive sound technical decision-making and lead technical conversations with other teams across Justworks.
Foster empathy for internal stakeholders and improve user experiences by making workflows easier and more efficient.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
