About The Position

Platphorm is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead day-to-day engineering operations for its marketplace and advice products. This role involves driving execution, growing the team, and collaborating with Product to achieve business goals. The Engineering Manager will have the opportunity to shape the engineering team's culture, processes, and growth within a stable, profitable, and growing tech company. Platphorm specializes in building multi-modal information exchanges and providing systems for businesses to create scalable, reliable marketplaces where buyers pay sellers for information delivered through various channels like voice, chat, video, SMS, and recorded phone messages. Their platform enables individuals to offer expert advice for a fee and allows others to find and pay for consultations. An example of their work is the website "Everclear," which offers clients 24/7 access to trusted advisors.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience
  • At least 2 years in an engineering management or team lead role
  • Comfortable working with consumer platforms that contain adult themes, mature content, and dating-related content
  • Strong hands-on background with Ruby on Rails
  • Strong hands-on background with modern JavaScript frameworks (React preferred)
  • Experience managing teams of 5–15 engineers, including fully remote and distributed teams
  • Track record of delivering software on predictable cadences in a product-driven environment
  • Experience managing both full-time employees and contractors as a unified team
  • Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code) and a point of view on how they change engineering workflows
  • Clear, direct communication style
  • Comfortable partnering with senior leadership and cross-functional teams
  • Holds direct reports accountable for results

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in marketplace, e-commerce, or consumer-facing web platforms
  • Familiarity with analytics tooling (GA4, BigQuery)
  • Familiarity with feature flagging (ConfigCat or similar)
  • Experience with observability stacks (Kibana, OpenSearch, ELK, or similar)
  • Familiarity with containerized deployment workflows (Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD)
  • Background in organizations navigating growth-stage transitions or evolving product strategy
  • Experience with telephony or video platforms (WebRTC, Twilio, or similar)
  • Track record of improving web performance (Core Web Vitals, Lighthouse, profiling, and resolving frontend/backend bottlenecks)
  • Comfort building process in a lean environment, where not everything is already defined

Responsibilities

  • Drive engineering execution, ensuring delivery outcomes, technical quality, and team velocity across a Ruby on Rails and React codebase.
  • Manage people through 1:1s, performance feedback, career development, hiring, and retention for a team of 6 FTEs and 3 full-time contractors.
  • Oversee technical operations including production stability, incident response, and deployment pipeline health in coordination with DevOps.
  • Improve process maturity by enhancing estimation accuracy, reducing cycle time, strengthening code review and QA handoff processes, and establishing clear engineering metrics.
  • Partner with the VP Product and the Product team to translate priorities into well-scoped, deliverable work.
  • Align engineering capacity with business priorities and deliver predictable, high-quality output.
  • Provide clear estimates and tradeoff analysis to inform roadmap decisions.
  • Build a culture of ownership, transparency, and pragmatic problem-solving.
  • Champion the adoption of AI-assisted development tools, evaluating, integrating, and establishing best practices.
  • Own production reliability, uptime, and incident response in partnership with DevOps.
  • Drive ongoing web performance optimization, focusing on Core Web Vitals, page load times, and bottleneck identification.
  • Invest in the team through regular 1:1s, clear performance feedback, and active career development.
