About The Position

UW is hiring an Engineering Manager for its Energy area, within the Technology & Product function and Engineering family. The role co-leads an autonomous, cross-functional squad alongside a Product Manager, working with colleagues in UX and Data. The Engineering Manager creates clarity, consistency, and momentum; sets direction; maintains delivery and quality standards; and balances short-term objectives with long-term sustainability. They coach and develop people, foster a positive team culture, manage complexity, and communicate across the business and with senior leadership. The role owns the squad’s technical decisions and their alignment with company and engineering strategy. It drives team goals and prioritisation, security and operational service-level objectives, on-call coverage, metrics reviews, and continuous improvement. In partnership with the Product Manager and team, the manager sets OKRs, co-leads annual and quarterly planning, surfaces risks and blockers, tracks delivery, and communicates progress to stakeholders. Responsibilities also include staffing and developing the team, performance and promotion reviews, sharing strategy and domain context, supporting healthy team dynamics, collaborating across functions, and keeping team expenditures within budget. UW describes itself as a remote-first business. The role includes a background check for successful candidates. UW welcomes applications from people of all backgrounds and says support requests will be considered fairly.

Requirements

  • Experience managing a team of engineers.
  • Experience leading technical design processes, facilitating design discussions, and representing the team in cross-functional technical conversations.
  • Ability to drive technical decisions to clear, documented outcomes by evaluating options, trade-offs, and next steps when the team disagrees.
  • Ability to validate designs and architecture against real-world edge cases and domain variations.
  • Ability to take ownership of technical decisions and align them with product and engineering strategy.
  • Strong understanding of engineering best practices and ability to identify improvement opportunities.
  • Hands-on experience with AI development tools and an openness to AI-assisted software development.
  • Experience defining team goals and driving prioritisation to achieve them.
  • Ability to create clarity amid competing priorities, technical options, or complex legacy-system migrations.
  • Ability to work with Product Managers to set OKRs aligned with company goals and co-lead annual and quarterly planning.
  • Experience identifying and mitigating risks, and improving delivery predictability by surfacing risks and cutting or sequencing scope to protect commitments.
  • Experience identifying practices for security and service-level objectives, driving operational excellence, and leading metrics reviews.
  • Proven ability to onboard, train, develop, and coach reports, and participate in performance calibration and promotion reviews.
  • Intermediate awareness of customer and market insights, and ability to communicate strategy to the squad.
  • Ability to build deep domain knowledge, including customer, partner, and operational variations beyond the happy path.
  • Ability to push back early on ambiguous or incomplete requirements and designs.
  • Experience working in complex, multi-variant domains where intricate logical edge cases matter.
  • Experience fostering healthy team dynamics, resolving interpersonal conflicts, and collaborating effectively across functions.

  • Work with the Product Manager and team to set OKRs aligned with company goals and co-lead annual and quarterly planning.
  • Identify risks and blockers early, work with stakeholders to mitigate them, measure team performance, and communicate progress against OKRs, KPIs, and milestones.
  • Ensure the squad has the technical skills needed to deliver objectives, developing team members and hiring as needed.
  • Onboard, train, develop, and coach direct reports, and participate in performance calibration and promotion reviews.
  • Communicate company, department, and pillar strategy and goals to the squad; build and share business and domain context with stakeholders.
  • Foster a healthy team culture, help resolve interpersonal conflicts, gather and act on feedback, and communicate company and department changes.
  • Raise the team’s voice to senior leadership with support from the manager and collaborate with UX, Data, and other cross-functional colleagues.
