Engineering Manager

Altana•Brooklyn, NY

About The Position

Altana is building an AI-powered product network for governments and businesses to support a more resilient and secure global economy. The Engineering organization develops this platform, which is designed to work with large volumes of data and a diverse customer base. Engineering Managers build and lead teams that deliver reliable, customer-adopted products, partnering closely with product and design from identifying customer problems through shipping and measuring outcomes. They are accountable for hiring, developing, and managing engineers, as well as the team's delivery, operational health, and customer value. The role is based in Brooklyn, New York, with hybrid work flexibility. Candidates must be within commuting distance of Altana's Williamsburg office.

Requirements

  • Professional experience writing back-end or data-driven software in demanding environments.
  • Strong hands-on engineering skills, including deploying production code to cloud environments and continuing to deliver high-quality code.
  • Demonstrated experience working on large, complex problems.
  • Experience leading a team as an engineering manager or as a tech lead with substantive people responsibilities such as coaching, feedback, and hiring.
  • Track record of staying close to customers, translating their problems into well-scoped work, and delivering incremental releases from prototype to production.
  • Experience running team planning and delivery while consistently meeting commitments.
  • Comfort owning operations, including incidents, on-call, and system cost.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with judgment about when to handle issues directly and when to escalate.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building production systems with LLMs, agents, evaluations, or retrieval.
  • Experience using engineering metrics such as DORA or SPACE to improve team practices.
  • Background in trade, supply chain, compliance, or work with government customers.

Responsibilities

  • Build the team and help each person grow; own end-to-end performance management and use engineers' career goals to shape their work.
  • Stay close to customers by joining customer calls, reviewing session recordings, tracking friction points, and ensuring engineers see customer problems firsthand.
  • Partner with product and design to define problems using customer evidence and challenge work that is not grounded in that evidence.
  • Contribute meaningful code, understand the domain's architecture and technical debt, and set quality standards; shift focus toward management as the team grows.
  • Use LLMs, agents, evaluations, and retrieval as standard building blocks, and establish standards for checking AI-assisted code before it reaches customers.
  • Run planning that produces realistic commitments, flag risks early, and deliver consistently.
  • Use shared engineering metrics to identify bottlenecks, improve team speed, understand how time is spent, and address operational debt.
  • Own operations for the team's systems: prevent incidents, respond quickly, distribute on-call load fairly, consider cost in design, and partner with security to keep systems secure.
  • Create a team culture that handles ambiguity well and enables people to share ideas safely.

  • Paid parental leave: 14 weeks for non-birthing, adoptive, and foster parents and up to 26 weeks for birthing parents, paid at 100% of base salary.
