Engineering Manager - Compose

Mural
•$176,645 - $252,350

About The Position

The Engineering Manager will lead the Mural Compose team, which is developing an AI-native product intended to attract new customers and expand revenue. The role will guide the product from early access toward a reliable product that customers use regularly, improving quality, reliability, and speed as adoption grows. This is a hands-on management role that stays close to code and architecture decisions, including reviewing pull requests and setting technical standards. The manager will lead, hire, and develop full-stack engineers; own delivery from experimentation through iteration; partner with Product and Design on the roadmap; and build a high-performing team in Mural’s remote-first culture at a sustainable pace.

Requirements

  • At least 2 years of direct software engineering management experience, including hiring, coaching, and performance management.
  • At least 5 years of prior software engineering experience building and operating production applications.
  • Hands-on technical work within the last 3–4 years.
  • A solid technical foundation to lead architecture discussions and review code credibly.
  • Ability to make timely decisions, learn from data, and adjust course based on evidence.
  • People-first leadership, empathy, active listening, and ability to build trust and psychological safety.
  • Excellent communication skills, including explaining technical tradeoffs to product, business, and customer stakeholders.
  • Experience leading a team that shipped LLM-powered features to production, including evaluation, quality monitoring, and cost management.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building AI agents, retrieval systems, or knowledge graphs, or familiarity with Model Context Protocol (MCP).

Responsibilities

  • Lead, hire, and grow a team of full-stack engineers through regular 1:1s, clear expectations, coaching, and performance management.
  • Own end-to-end delivery using a fast experimental loop: ship early to real users, measure results, and iterate while maintaining reliability.
  • Partner with Product and Design as co-owners of the Compose roadmap, using customer feedback and usage data to guide priorities.
  • Raise engineering standards across testing, observability, and AI-assisted development.
  • Review pull requests, set technical standards, and stay close to code and architecture decisions.
  • Model Mural’s remote-first, work-in-public culture while maintaining a sustainable pace.
