About The Position

DTN is seeking a hands-on Engineering Manager to lead the team building foundational capabilities for its Operational Decisioning Platform (ODP). ODP packages cloud infrastructure into higher-level capabilities so engineers, solutions teams, and customers can build data products, applications, and AI-powered tools without managing the underlying infrastructure. The Platform team develops APIs, SDKs, command-line interfaces, developer tooling, and managed services, with substantial greenfield work that offers the opportunity to shape architecture, engineering practices, and the platform’s long-term evolution. This player/coach role combines people management, technical direction, platform delivery, and operational ownership. The manager will guide engineers building distributed systems, partner with Architecture, Product, and platform consumers, and establish the quality and operational rigor needed to deliver secure, reliable, reusable capabilities at scale. The role owns team development and delivery, platform architecture, adoption and developer experience, security and reliability, cross-functional coordination, and the use of AI-assisted engineering practices and AI-enabled platform capabilities. The manager will translate strategic objectives into engineering roadmaps and measurable milestones, while balancing speed-to-value with durable, scalable platform foundations. DTN is a global data and technology company serving energy, agriculture, and weather-driven industries. It has more than 1,200 employees globally. The position is remote, subject to role-dependent conditions. Targeted hiring base pay is $110,000–$145,000, with possible variable pay and benefits; actual compensation depends on factors including experience, training, skills, business needs, and internal equity.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of software engineering experience.
  • At least 2 years operating at a T3 (Staff) through T5 (Principal) engineering level.
  • At least 2 years in a technical lead or engineering management capacity.
  • Demonstrated experience shipping, operating, and supporting production software systems.
  • Proven ability to hire, coach, mentor, and develop engineers across multiple experience levels.
  • Experience establishing an engineering culture based on accountability, collaboration, technical excellence, and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to provide technical leadership while managing delivery, people development, and operational responsibilities.
  • Strong technical foundation in AWS cloud-native architecture and distributed systems.
  • Ability to review technical designs, engage deeply on system architecture, and make informed architectural tradeoffs.
  • Experience with platform engineering, developer tooling, SDKs, infrastructure, or comparable teams building foundational capabilities for other engineers.
  • Strong understanding of secure multi-account and multi-tenant cloud architectures.
  • Fluency in cloud identity and access management, tenant-isolation boundaries, and security requirements for distributed cloud systems.
  • Understanding of the architecture and operational considerations for scalable, secure, reliable shared platform capabilities.
  • Familiarity with modern AI development toolkits and AI-assisted engineering workflows, including coding assistants and agentic development tools.
  • Understanding of how AI-augmented capabilities, including LLMs, agents, and related services, can be incorporated into modular platform components.
  • Ability to guide adoption of AI-assisted development practices without compromising engineering quality.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and stakeholder-management skills across Engineering, Product, Architecture, and Go-to-Market organizations.
  • Ability to communicate technical decisions, architectural tradeoffs, delivery progress, and risks to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence technical direction and coordinate delivery across teams with competing priorities.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building or operating a multi-tenant SaaS platform, cross-account control plane, or internal developer platform at scale.
  • Familiarity with a modern cloud platform stack, including TypeScript, Node.js, Terraform, serverless technologies, container services, managed data stores, and cloud security primitives.
  • Experience developing and operating reusable APIs, SDKs, CLIs, developer portals, and shared platform services.
  • Experience driving internal developer platform adoption and increasing reuse of shared components across engineering teams.
  • Demonstrated success establishing platform capabilities that improve developer productivity and reduce duplicated engineering effort.
  • Experience in a forward-deployed or solutions-engineering model where customer-embedded engineers consume shared platform capabilities.
  • Experience with complex provisioning and lifecycle automation, secure cross-account communication, and multi-tenant infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with trunk-based development, infrastructure as code, automated testing, and incremental, reversible releases.
  • Experience in operationally complex or data-intensive industries such as energy, logistics, weather, or agriculture.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage platform engineers across experience levels, including hiring, onboarding, performance management, professional development, and day-to-day delivery.
  • Coach and mentor engineers and foster a collaborative, accountable engineering culture.
  • Set standards for engineering quality, technical execution, operational discipline, and continuous improvement.
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership, participate in architectural discussions, evaluate designs, and guide complex technical tradeoffs.
  • Own the platform’s technical direction in partnership with senior engineers and architecture stakeholders.
  • Guide design and implementation of foundational distributed, multi-account cloud systems built on AWS.
  • Oversee development of developer-facing APIs, SDKs, CLIs, tooling, and managed services.
  • Lead distributed-systems work involving secure cross-account communication, multi-tenant isolation, provisioning, and lifecycle automation.
  • Develop platform abstractions that let teams use purpose-built operational capabilities instead of raw cloud infrastructure.
  • Guide architecture for new and evolving capabilities, including greenfield development, with attention to scalability, security, maintainability, and reuse.
  • Build a shared platform that internal engineering and solutions teams want to use and contribute to.
  • Encourage teams to consume, improve, and contribute to shared platform components, making reuse the default and reducing duplicated effort.
  • Partner with Product to deliver usable milestones, including a developer portal, technical documentation, and initial productized platform capabilities.
  • Incorporate stakeholder feedback into technical priorities and the product roadmap.
  • Own the platform’s operational contract and maintain security, isolation, reliability, and observability guarantees.
  • Establish strong cloud identity and access management, isolation boundaries, and appropriate security controls.
  • Guide signed and authenticated service-to-service communication, least-privilege access, and secure multi-account architectures.
  • Make end-to-end observability, monitoring, and operational visibility foundational platform capabilities.
  • Own on-call health, incident response processes, and service-level objectives.
  • Promote automated testing, infrastructure as code, trunk-based development, and incremental, reversible delivery.
  • Balance availability, security, operational requirements, and efficient delivery of new capabilities.
  • Partner with Architecture, Identity, Product, and Solutions/Field Engineering to ensure platform capabilities meet stakeholder needs.
  • Translate strategic objectives into engineering roadmaps and measurable delivery milestones; communicate direction, progress, dependencies, and risks.
  • Coordinate across engineering teams to resolve dependencies, align architectural decisions, and deliver platform investments with business and developer value.
  • Champion AI-assisted software development practices, including coding assistants and agentic development tools, to improve productivity and velocity.
  • Guide integration of AI-augmented capabilities into the platform’s modular architecture, including capabilities involving LLMs, AI agents, and related services.
  • Evaluate emerging AI development technologies for their potential to improve workflows and expand capabilities for platform consumers.
