Requirements

  • Experience as a builder who came up through engineering.
  • Ability to read a pull request and follow an architecture conversation.
  • Ability to identify a padded estimate.
  • Experience managing managers (leads), not just engineers.
  • Understanding of how an engineer thinks and what makes them tick.
  • Ability to get a group of highly intelligent experts pulling in the same direction and keep them there.
  • Ability to hold a firm, honest line with the business on what's achievable and back it with reality.
  • Ability to say no to people higher on the org chart.
  • Calm under competing priorities.
  • Allergic to letting work drift unfinished.
  • Technical enough to follow the work, challenge an estimate, and tell when a 'blocker' is real.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the day-to-day of the engineering organization so that four teams ship the right things, on time, without burning out or losing focus.
  • Own how and when the work gets done and who does it well.
  • Lead the four engineering team leads, coach them, hold them accountable, and grow them.
  • Make the whole engineering organization operate as one coordinated unit rather than four silos.
  • Ensure cross-team delivery by making workflow between teams seamless so nothing stalls.
  • Negotiate delivery commitments with the CTO against actual capacity.
  • Run the engineering team's own weekly Level 10 meeting, focused on engineering's leading indicators and issues.
  • Build a cadence that keeps the team focused and stops people from flipping between things half-finished.
  • Own the hiring bar, the pipeline, and retaining good people.
  • Protect team focus by making decisions on whether to include small features or fixes, and saying no when necessary to protect commitments.
  • Manage the delivery cadence and growth of the security/operations team lead.
