About The Position

Birdy Grey is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead their Site Experience and Lead Gen engineering teams. This role involves managing software engineers across two squads: Site Experience, focusing on storefront features for a custom Shopify Hydrogen build, and Lead Gen, concentrating on conversion optimization, A/B testing, and top-of-funnel experimentation. The manager will remain technically involved, contributing to storefront performance, Web Vitals, bug fixes, and building supporting tooling and microservices. A primary focus of this role is the growth and development of the engineers on the team, helping them advance their skills and careers.

Requirements

  • 6+ years in software engineering
  • 2+ years in a people leadership role
  • Demonstrated track record of growing and developing direct reports
  • Experience managing 3+ direct reports
  • Strong TypeScript fundamentals
  • Experience with modern JavaScript frameworks (React, Remix, Next.js, etc.)
  • Experience with Node, Python, or Ruby for backend services and microservices
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, deploy infrastructure, and developer tooling
  • Experience implementing and leading agile processes
  • Genuine enthusiasm for AI as a force multiplier for engineering teams
  • Communicates the 'why' behind decisions
  • Writes well-scoped tickets with unambiguous acceptance criteria
  • Experience with marketing and analytics pixels, Google Tag Manager, and marketing tech ops
  • Comfortable working with marketing and data teams on web events, both client-side and server-side
  • Experience with cloud services and architectures (GCP preferred)
  • Effective at influencing, building trust, and collaborating cross-functionally
  • Hard working and willing to roll your sleeves up
  • Entrepreneurial spirit — thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced, fluid environment; comfortable with ambiguity and proactive about leading projects

  • Shopify Hydrogen / Shopify Plus experience
  • React experience specifically
  • Hands-on experience using AI tooling (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, etc.) to improve developer workflows or team processes

Responsibilities

  • Invest meaningfully in direct reports' growth through stretch projects, expanded scope, and visibility opportunities.
  • Provide architectural mentorship on system design, trade-offs, and long-horizon thinking.
  • Run consistent 1:1s, goal-setting, and performance review cycles.
  • Communicate the 'why' behind decisions to foster independent, aligned decision-making.
  • Foster psychological safety by modeling vulnerability and owning mistakes.
  • Adapt management style to individual needs and solicit feedback.
  • Own the platform around the storefront, including deploy pipeline, developer tooling, AI-assisted developer experience, and supporting microservices/data layers.
  • Champion observability, resiliency, and performance across the storefront and services (Sentry, performance budgets, alerting, on-call).
  • Explore AI and emerging developer practices to enhance team output and developer experience.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Engineering on the technical roadmap, balancing feature work, tech debt, and platform investment.
  • Stay hands-on to unblock the team with bug fixes, tooling work, and microservices scaffolding.
  • Lead agile processes (standups, grooming, planning, retros) and write clear, well-scoped tickets.
  • Identify and mitigate risks throughout development lifecycles.
  • Foster a culture of test-driven development, code review, and engineering quality.
  • Promote a culture of impeccable documentation.
  • Partner with Product and Product Design on requirements, feasibility, trade-offs, and roadmap.
  • Partner with Marketing, eCommerce, and Data teams on experimentation, storefront features, and analytics implementation.
  • Ensure compliance with accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1) and privacy frameworks (GDPR, CCPA).
