About The Position

Verkada is transforming how organizations protect their people and places with an integrated, AI-powered platform. A leader in cloud physical security, Verkada helps organizations strengthen safety and efficiency through one connected software platform that includes solutions for video security, access control, air quality sensors, alarms, intercoms, and visitor management. Over 30,000 organizations worldwide, including more than 100+ companies in the Fortune 500, trust Verkada as their physical security layer for easier management, intelligent control, and scalable deployments. Founded in 2016, Verkada has expanded rapidly with 15 offices and 2,200+ full-time employees. We are standing up a new Cameras Firmware Quality group that will be responsible for the core reliability of our camera fleet. The goal of this group is to develop the processes, tools, infrastructure and ultimately tests to validate product function & performance. By building reliable Hardware-in-the-Loop automation and defining clear release metrics, you will remove manual testing bottlenecks and enable the camera team to ship code faster and with more confidence. As the leader of this group you will not just be managing a team; you will be rolling up your sleeves to architect our Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) automation infrastructure from scratch. As you build the framework, you will hire, mentor, and manage a team of automated and manual testers to execute a comprehensive validation strategy prior to global deployments.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience building a hardware/firmware QA team and a test automation system entirely from scratch.
  • Deep experience working with connected IP cameras or similar video streaming IoT products. You understand how to test them end-to-end, from the image sensor pipeline to the cloud backend.
  • Highly hands-on with automation. Deep proficiency in Python, C/C++, or similar languages for building robust embedded test frameworks.
  • Extensive experience designing physical HIL test rigs, working with microcontrollers, relay boards, and networking equipment to simulate real-world physical interactions.
  • Previous experience directly managing, mentoring, and scaling a team of QA engineers (both manual and automated).
  • Strong understanding of Embedded Linux/RTOS, networking protocols (TCP/IP, RTSP, WebRTC), and low-level debugging.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Image Quality (IQ) testing and optical lab setups (lightboxes, calibration charts).
  • Experience testing Over-The-Air (OTA) update mechanisms at scale.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD tools (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI) and integrating HIL rigs into the build pipeline.

Responsibilities

  • Build the Team: Recruit, hire, and mentor a high-performing group of automation software engineers and QA specialists to assist with manual validation.
  • Own the end-to-end quality verification of our camera products, acting as the final gatekeeper for firmware and system validation prior to deployment.
  • Oversee the design, procurement, and management of the physical camera test lab and HIL environments.
  • Design and build a scalable Hardware-in-the-Loop test automation system from scratch.
  • Create the core infrastructure, test primitives, and SDKs necessary for test execution and reporting.
  • Lead the creation of automated test suites targeting embedded device functionality, network edge cases, and continuous integration pipelines.
  • Oversee comprehensive test case creation, tracking, oversight, and coverage metrics.
  • Direct manual testing efforts, including augmented testing, exploratory testing (e.g., utilizing Instant Archives), and repeated validation.
  • Oversee the triage, log capture, and reproduction of complex field issues and regressions.
  • Accountable for product performance monitoring in the field post-deployment.
  • Work with firmware developers to instrument firmware with additional metrics, tracking firmware performance during release candidates and in general production.
