Engineering Manager, Platform Foundations

AnthropicSan Francisco, CA
$485,000 - $625,000Hybrid

About The Position

Anthropic is seeking an Engineering Manager for its Platform organization to lead and grow teams of software engineers. These teams are responsible for the foundational building blocks that Anthropic’s product organization relies on, operating at the highest scale. The role involves scaling systems to meet unprecedented user base and performance demands, managing infrastructure across AWS, Azure, and GCP, and removing bottlenecks to enhance development speed and quality. The Engineering Manager will set the strategy and standards for performance, reliability, and output for product engineers, playing a critical role in the speed and scalability of the entire product organization. This position requires defining direction, partnering with leaders across product, research, and infrastructure, and developing the leadership capabilities of managers and senior engineers within the organization.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of engineering experience with a deep track record of engineering leadership (8+ years), including running a multi-team organization and managing managers at significant scale
  • Built and operated product infrastructure at very high scale, with stringent reliability and efficiency requirements
  • Led complex multi-region or international infrastructure deployments
  • Led an organization through a period of major growth or transition — for example, taking systems and teams from early-stage to enterprise-grade while absorbing order-of-magnitude increases in demand
  • Both a startup environment and significant enterprise-scale company experience, and know how to navigate the challenges that come with that scale
  • Excellent developer of leaders, with a strong record recruiting, scaling, and retaining engineering talent while growing managers and senior ICs
  • Manage senior stakeholders well. You communicate clearly, build trust across functions, and keep executive partners aligned through ambiguity
  • Strong technical background to set architectural direction and make sound decisions across a broad infrastructure surface
  • Care deeply about Anthropic's mission and about developing AI responsibly and safely

Nice To Haves

  • Deploying and operating production infrastructure multi-cloud, across the major cloud providers (AWS, Azure, GCP)
  • Developer productivity and developer experience at scale: the tooling, CI/CD, and workflows that entire engineering organizations depend on
  • Cloud-native architecture, containerization (e.g. Kubernetes), and large-scale capacity management
  • Operating infrastructure in regulated environments or under data-residency and sovereignty requirements
  • Building or operating infrastructure that serves AI and LLM products

Responsibilities

  • Lead a multi-team engineering organization through other managers and tech leads — owning hiring, the development of your leaders, and a culture where strong people do their best work and stay
  • Set the technical strategy and multi-year roadmap for product infrastructure: compute, networking, the systems serving our APIs and apps, and the developer productivity tooling the whole product org runs on
  • Bring clarity to a company-critical charter: defining direction, sequencing the work, and derisking large initiatives that span multiple teams
  • Scale our infrastructure to meet rapidly growing customer demand while holding a high bar on reliability and cost efficiency
  • Drive the operation of our stack across all three major cloud providers, including complex multi-region and international deployments
  • Raise development velocity across the entire product engineering org by finding and removing the bottlenecks that hold it back, without trading away quality
  • Partner deeply with product, research, and infrastructure leaders, and make the architectural decisions that serve the whole organization
  • Manage a broad set of senior stakeholders and keep executives and partner teams aligned as priorities shift
  • Grow the next layer of engineering leadership by developing managers and senior ICs so the org can take on more

Benefits

  • competitive compensation
  • generous vacation
  • parental leave
  • flexible working hours
  • optional equity donation matching
