About The Position

Clipboard is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead their Platform team. This team is responsible for building the self-serve developer platform, including infrastructure, tools, processes, and education, enabling all engineers at Clipboard to design, build, test, deploy, and secure software efficiently and to high standards. The role involves co-owning customer outcomes with product teams, adopting a customer-centric mindset to understand and solve engineering organization problems, and measuring success by adoption and impact. This is a hands-on leadership position where the manager is expected to stay technically involved, understand system tradeoffs, infrastructure, deployments, reliability, and security. The role requires balancing technical direction, execution, and people development, coaching engineers for growth while ensuring consistent team output. The Platform team plays a crucial role in addressing cross-cutting engineering problems, building a "paved path" to reduce work and cognitive load, owning critical non-functional aspects, managing shared systems like auth and notifications, and setting production safety guardrails in collaboration with the Security team. The distinctive aspect of this role is Clipboard's architecture, where delivery teams own their areas end-to-end, providing engineers with autonomy and ownership.

Requirements

  • Demonstrates first-principles thinking, diving deep to understand what is actually going on before deciding what to do.
  • Demonstrates customer-centricity, staying close to the customer and using that context to make decisions and prioritize work.
  • Demonstrates ownership and judgment, taking responsibility for outcomes, making clear calls on what matters, and helping teams move forward.
  • Possesses technical strength, staying close enough to the work to understand tradeoffs, support good technical decisions, and know when something does not feel right.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Platform team responsible for building and maintaining the self-serve developer platform.
  • Co-own customer outcomes with product teams, focusing on a customer-centric approach to understand and solve engineering organization problems.
  • Measure success by real adoption and impact of the platform.
  • Stay technically involved to understand tradeoffs in systems, infrastructure, deployments, reliability, and security.
  • Balance technical direction, execution, and people development, coaching engineers for growth.
  • Ensure the team ships consistently.
  • Make decisions on centralizing cross-cutting friction, when to build a "paved path" versus letting teams solve their own problems.
  • Anticipate and address new opportunities and risks, including those introduced by AI-augmented and AI-autonomous development.
  • Solve cross-cutting problems once so every team benefits.
  • Build common tools, processes, and infrastructure to reduce work and cognitive load.
  • Own hard tech and non-functional work that the business depends on.
  • Own shared systems like authentication, notifications, and chat.
  • Set guardrails for production safety in partnership with the Security team.
