About The Position

Airbnb was born in 2007 when two hosts welcomed three guests to their San Francisco home, and has since grown to over 5 million hosts who have welcomed over 2 billion guest arrivals in almost every country across the globe. Every day, hosts offer unique stays and experiences that make it possible for guests to connect with communities in a more authentic way. Identity & Privacy Experience is a product engineering team within Users, Identity, and Community (UIC) in Guest & Host. We build the user-facing experiences that let people manage how they are represented, verified, and protected on Airbnb — spanning identity verification, profile visibility controls, terms of service consent, and privacy settings. We partner closely with Trust platform teams (who build the underlying systems) to deliver the product layer that users directly interact with. As Engineering Manager, Identity & Privacy Experience, you will lead a team of 6-8 engineers building the experiences that establish and maintain trust between Airbnb and its community of hosts and guests. Your team's work directly impacts regulatory compliance, user safety, and the authenticity of every interaction on the platform. The community you will join Identity & Privacy Experience sits at the intersection of user trust, regulatory compliance, and product experience. The team builds the surfaces where users verify their identity, control their privacy, and consent to terms — high-stakes flows that millions of people encounter. You'll join a group within a broader 18-engineer org (three pods: Signup & Login, Account Management, and Identity & Privacy) that values strong engineering craftsmanship, pragmatic execution, and close cross-functional partnership with Trust, Legal, Policy, and Design. The difference you will make You will lead the team responsible for how Airbnb earns and maintains user trust through identity and privacy experiences. Your leadership will:

Requirements

  • 8+ years of industry experience with 3+ years in engineering management (or equivalent leadership), including leading product engineering teams shipping user-facing features across multiple platforms.
  • Experience building and shipping trust, identity, privacy, or compliance-related product experiences — or adjacent domains where regulatory and legal requirements significantly shape the product.
  • Strong product intuition and ability to partner with PMs, designers, and legal/policy stakeholders to translate complex requirements into clear, simple user experiences.
  • Track record of managing cross-platform teams (backend + mobile + web) and coordinating delivery across multiple workstreams.
  • Excellent communication skills — ability to explain technical constraints to non-technical stakeholders (Legal, Policy) and translate regulatory requirements into engineering work.
  • Experience with sensitive data handling, privacy-by-design principles, or identity verification systems is a strong plus.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with identity verification (IDV) products, KYC/KYB flows, or government document handling at scale.
  • Familiarity with privacy regulations (GDPR, CCPA, DSA) and how they translate into product requirements and consent flows.
  • Experience partnering with Trust, Risk, Legal, or Compliance organizations where the product is shaped by regulatory constraints.
  • Track record of delivering high-stakes, low-error-tolerance experiences (e.g., compliance flows, financial products, healthcare) where getting it wrong has real consequences.
  • Experience leading teams through large-scale migrations or platform transitions while maintaining product velocity.

Responsibilities

  • Own the identity verification experience end-to-end — guest and host IDV flows, government document handling (Vault), and authentic representation features that verify real people behind every account.
  • Drive privacy controls that give users real agency — global and trip-level visibility settings, profile access controls, and consent management that balance user autonomy with platform safety.
  • Deliver high-stakes compliance experiences — Terms of Service rollouts, consent capture across platforms (iOS, Android, Web), and litigation-ready audit trails that satisfy Legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Partner deeply with Trust platform teams — translate platform capabilities (consent systems, verification infrastructure, risk signals) into polished product experiences, and advocate for product needs upstream.
  • Navigate ambiguity at the intersection of product, legal, and engineering — many decisions in this space involve tradeoffs between user experience, regulatory requirements, and technical feasibility. You'll need to frame these tradeoffs clearly and drive alignment.
  • Grow a high-performing, cross-platform team spanning backend, iOS, Android, and web engineers, with a culture of ownership and quality.

Benefits

  • This role may also be eligible for bonus, equity, benefits, and Employee Travel Credits.
