About The Position

The Engineering Manager, Growth Expansion role at Justworks involves building and overseeing a team of software engineers as a player-coach. This position is responsible for coordinating projects, setting priorities, and motivating engineers to create and maintain features for customers. The role requires a blend of hands-on coding, a strong technical background, and a passion for mentoring and developing teams. The Growth Expansion team specifically focuses on increasing revenue from the existing customer base by delivering relevant products, features, and upgrade paths as customer needs evolve. This includes identifying customer signals indicating change and translating them into actionable nudges, as well as building self-service upsell and cross-sell functionalities within the product.

Requirements

7+ years of experience as a software engineer working on production web applications.
Minimum of 1 year of experience managing a team of engineers.
Demonstrable experience prioritizing, crafting, and achieving plans.
Strong communication skills with ability to grasp and explain complex concepts to both technical and non-technical people.
High levels of empathy and interpersonal skills.
Solid understanding of core web development technologies (e.g., Data structures, data stores, algorithms, distributed systems, and common patterns around these frameworks).

Responsibilities

Work with Engineers, Design, and Product Managers to prioritize, schedule, and execute projects for rapid development and shipment of new features.
Partner with Product to define and execute the team’s long-term strategy and quarterly roadmap, including setting goals and measuring progress/success.
Communicate and coordinate with other teams (inside and outside of engineering) to understand requirements and identify opportunities for improvement.
Mentor engineers to foster technical skill growth through a culture of technical excellence, innovation, and continuous learning.
Provide technical and non-technical guidance to direct reports.
Attract, hire, develop, and retain a high-performing team of engineers.
Drive sound technical decision-making and lead technical conversations with other teams across Justworks.
Instill empathy in the team for internal stakeholders to create better user experiences, focusing on making workflows easier and more efficient.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
