About the position

We are seeking a technical and results-driven Engineering Manager to lead our Data Infrastructure team at Discord. This team plays a crucial role in our Data & ML platform, handling petabytes of data and serving hundreds of millions of users. As the Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for building robust and high-scale data systems, leading a team of engineers, and collaborating with stakeholders to drive real results for the business. The ideal candidate should have extensive experience in Data Infrastructure, Engineering Management, and a passion for user privacy and data governance.

Responsibilities

Build robust, high-scale data systems that power internal teams and product features used by many millions of users every day

Lead a team of highly-engaged engineers by hiring, coaching, and instilling a sense of ownership and mission

Mentor and guide the careers of the engineers through coaching and finding opportunities that support their technical skillset and goals

Work with stakeholders across the business to empower analytics, ML, experimentation, and more to drive real results for the business

Work with other Engineering Managers to improve the Engineering organization and uphold our workplace philosophy

Own the performance, scalability, reliability, efficiency, and more of the systems that form the foundation of our Machine Learning, Analytics, and Data Science efforts

Build infrastructure to ingest, process, and manage petabytes of data using Scala, Java, Rust, and Python

Build the platform that prioritizes privacy, excellence in data governance, and delivering on our high expectations for doing right by our users’ data

Have extensive experience leading complex technical projects with successful outcomes; able to take a high-level goal and achieve a shippable solution

Work with complex distributed data systems deployed at scale and build end-to-end solutions

Passionate about user privacy and have built systems with strong data governance controls that respect privacy and security principles

Experience with large scale data processing/orchestration

Requirements

5+ years of experience as an engineer working on Data Infrastructure
2+ years of experience as an Engineering Manager
Extensive experience leading complex technical projects with successful outcomes
Experience with complex distributed data systems deployed at scale and building end-to-end solutions
Passionate about user privacy and building systems with strong data governance controls
Experience with large scale data processing/orchestration systems (Spark/Flink/DataFlow)
Strong product sense and understanding of customers
Strong communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally
Experience developing engineers of multiple levels
Up-to-date with industry trends and ability to identify new techniques to solve technical problems
