CareMessage is a social enterprise and the largest patient engagement platform for low-income populations in the United States. We deliver personalized health education and care coordination through text messaging — reaching patients where they already are, in the language they speak, at the moments that matter most. Unlike technology built for large health systems and adapted down, CareMessage is designed from the ground up for organizations serving low-income, historically marginalized communities. Why Join Us in Leveraging Technology to Improve Health Equity Many of us have had the experience of doing good work or building great products, but wondering if it is truly making an impact. At CareMessage, our mission is clear: improve health equity for low-income populations across the United States. Every role here connects directly to that purpose. We care deeply about the communities we serve, and we also hold a high standard for performance, collaboration, and integrity. Our ideal team members: Deliver meaningful, measurable results Invest in their teammates and build trust Seek feedback and continually grow Stay steady and solutions-oriented in ambiguity Lead with integrity and responsibility Communicate with clarity and empathy If you are motivated by impact, energized by collaboration, and ready to do some of the most meaningful work of your career, we encourage you to apply. If this sounds like you, we would love to meet you. _____________________________________ Role Overview The Engineering Manager, Data & Clinical Integration owns and drives the technical direction of the two teams responsible for CareMessage's data — the Clinical Integration team, which connects CareMessage to electronic health records (EHRs) and other clinical data sources (e.g. HIEs, Payor Data, etc.) across our customer base, and the Data team, which turns that data into trustworthy insights. CareMessage supports over 400 safety-net healthcare organizations including federally qualified health centers and free clinics that care for low-income and underserved patients nationwide, and these two teams are the engine behind our ability to measurably demonstrate impact on clinical outcomes, access to care, and the social drivers of health. This is a leadership role over existing teams: their systems and roadmaps are already in place, and your job is to lead, deepen, and scale them. A core part of this role is leading both teams to turn clinical data from our customers' many different EHRs into trustworthy, query-ready data that can measurably demonstrate health outcomes — and scaling those insights through both AI/ML and human analysis. The Clinical Integration team builds and maintains the integrations that connect CareMessage to leading EHRs (Epic, eClinicalWorks, NextGen, AthenaHealth, and others) over HL7, FHIR, Proprietary APIs, and direct-database interfaces using the Rhapsody integration engine, and it owns the first step of the clinical data pipeline — converting clinical data to FHIR and landing it in our FHIR Store and BigQuery. The Data team builds on top of that with a medallion (bronze/silver/gold) architecture in BigQuery using native Google Cloud services, and dbt, surfacing insights through Metabase dashboards such as our Health Equity and diabetes-outcomes views; and increasingly powering AI/ML-driven workflows that surface insights at scale. In this role, you will collaborate closely with Product, Customer Success, Data, Compliance, and Engineering to design and deliver the platform and integrations that deepen patient engagement and health outcomes, with direct ownership of technical decisions and customer-facing system behavior. Our ideal candidate is an experienced Engineering Manager (technical, people and process leader) who thrives in dynamic, fully-distributed environments and is energized by the intersection of healthcare interoperability and data. They are passionate about partnering with business stakeholders to develop the platform and processes that uncover data insights, and they are dedicated to the professional growth of engineers. They view themselves as a catalyst for organizational outcomes and accomplish that through enabling high-output team productivity and continuously seek ways to elevate Engineering and the organization as a whole. Above all, they share our mission-driven commitment and take pride in contributing to our objective of advancing health equity for low-income populations. One of the strongest skills we value here is taking a scientific approach to everything we do. We rely on evidence alongside intuition, and we look for data that challenges our assumptions before drawing conclusions. Our PRDs, documentation, and wikis reflect this mindset — we use data to guide decisions and validate our work.
