About The Position

Justworks is hiring an Engineering Manager, Backend, to lead and help build a team of software engineers as a player-coach. The role combines hands-on coding and technical leadership with mentoring and team development. The manager coordinates projects, sets priorities, and motivates engineers to create and maintain customer features.

The manager partners with engineering, design, and product colleagues to deliver projects and shape the team’s long-term strategy and quarterly roadmap. The listed base wage range for the New York City office is $205,000 to $261,500 per year. Compensation varies based on factors including skills, relevant experience, and work location.

Requirements

• At least 7 years of experience as a software engineer working on production web applications.
• At least 1 year of experience managing a team of engineers.
• Demonstrable experience prioritizing, crafting, and achieving plans.
• Strong communication skills, including the ability to understand and explain complex concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
• High levels of empathy and interpersonal skills.
• Solid understanding of core web development technologies, including data structures, data stores, algorithms, distributed systems, and common patterns around these frameworks.

Responsibilities

• Work with engineers, designers, and product managers to prioritize, schedule, and execute projects and ship new features.
• Partner with Product to define and execute the team’s long-term strategy and quarterly roadmap, including setting goals and measuring progress and success.
• Coordinate with teams inside and outside engineering to understand requirements and identify opportunities for improvement.
• Mentor engineers and foster technical excellence, innovation, and continuous learning.
• Provide technical and non-technical guidance to direct reports.
• Attract, hire, develop, and retain a high-performing engineering team.
• Help drive sound technical decisions and lead technical discussions with teams across Justworks.
• Foster empathy for internal stakeholders to improve user experiences and make workflows easier and more efficient.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
