Engineering Lead, Planning

Avathon•Pleasanton, CA
•$160,000 - $220,000•Onsite

About The Position

Avathon is hiring an Engineering Lead to build and run its Planning product on the Avathon platform. The role turns forecasting and optimization models into production planning software for demand planning, supply and capacity planning, inventory, and clear-to-build. Planning runs on Avathon’s Computational Knowledge Graph and uses operational data from ERP, MES, PLM, and logistics systems. This is a hands-on Product Engineering leadership role involving coding, architecture ownership, and leading a team of engineers. The Engineering Lead owns Planning service architecture, including data models, plan generation, scenario and what-if runs, versioning, and reconciliation. The role builds data pipelines, productionizes forecasting and optimization models, and designs planning capabilities to scale across large bills of materials, many SKUs, and multiple sites. It also integrates planning entities with the Computational Knowledge Graph, collaborates with the agent team, turns customer-specific work into reusable product components, and partners with product and forward-deployed teams to deliver and support the product. The position is based in the Bay Area, California. Candidates must report to the Pleasanton office five days a week. The stated annual salary range is $160,000–$220,000, with compensation dependent on factors including location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of software engineering experience, including at least 3 years leading engineers.
  • Experience building planning, scheduling, forecasting, or optimization software, or working on planning systems at a large manufacturer.
  • Strong backend skills in Python, Java, or a similar language, with experience building data pipelines and APIs.
  • Experience integrating optimization solvers such as Gurobi, CPLEX, or OR-Tools, or similar, and ML models into production systems.
  • Solid understanding of supply chain planning concepts, including demand, supply, MRP, capacity, and inventory.
  • Experience with large-scale data processing and cloud platforms such as GCP or AWS.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Operations Research, or a related field.
  • Must be based in the Bay Area, California, and report to the Pleasanton office five days a week.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with graph data models.
  • Experience with planning software from vendors such as Blue Yonder, o9 Solutions, Kinaxis, Oracle SCM, SAP IBP, or Anaplan.

Responsibilities

  • Own the technical architecture for Planning services, including data models, plan generation, scenario and what-if runs, plan versioning, and reconciliation.
  • Build pipelines that bring orders, inventory, bills of materials, production schedules, and shipment data from ERP, MES, PLM, and TMS sources into the planning model.
  • Productionize forecasting and optimization models in partnership with AI scientists, including solver integration, scheduling plan runs, and monitoring.
  • Design planning services to handle large multi-level bills of materials, many SKUs and sites, and plans that refresh in minutes rather than overnight.
  • Model planning entities and their relationships in the Computational Knowledge Graph so supply issues can be traced to affected orders and production.
  • Work with the agent team to enable AI agents to explain plans, flag exceptions, and recommend actions.
  • Turn customer-specific planning work into reusable product components.
  • Lead and grow a team of engineers; set priorities, review designs and code, and mentor team members.
  • Partner with the Planning product manager on roadmap, scope, and release planning.
  • Own quality, performance, and reliability for Planning in production.
  • Work with forward-deployed teams on customer go-lives and escalations.
  • Write code and own the Planning product architecture as a hands-on engineering lead.
