Engineering Lead, Planning

Avathon•Pleasanton, CA

About The Position

Avathon is hiring an Engineering Lead to build and run its Planning product on the Avathon platform. The role leads the team responsible for turning forecasting and optimization models into production planning software covering demand planning, supply and capacity planning, inventory, and clear-to-build. Planning runs on Avathon’s Computational Knowledge Graph and integrates data from ERP, MES, PLM, and logistics systems. This is a hands-on Product Engineering leadership role involving coding, technical architecture ownership, and engineering team leadership. The Engineering Lead will own the architecture and development of Planning services, build and scale data pipelines, productionize forecasting and optimization models, and integrate planning entities with the Computational Knowledge Graph. The role also partners with AI, product, and forward-deployed teams to create reusable product capabilities, support customer deployments, and maintain production quality, performance, and reliability. The position is based in the Bay Area, California, and requires reporting to Avathon’s Pleasanton office five days per week; it is not remote.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of software engineering experience, including at least 3 years leading engineers.
  • Experience building planning, scheduling, forecasting, or optimization software, ideally at a planning vendor such as Blue Yonder, o9 Solutions, Kinaxis, Oracle SCM, SAP IBP, or Anaplan, or on planning systems at a large manufacturer.
  • Strong backend skills in Python, Java, or a similar language, with experience building data pipelines and APIs.
  • Experience integrating optimization solvers such as Gurobi, CPLEX, or OR-Tools, or similar tools, and machine learning models into production systems.
  • Solid understanding of supply chain planning concepts, including demand, supply, MRP, capacity, and inventory.
  • Experience with large-scale data processing and cloud platforms such as GCP or AWS.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Operations Research, or a related field.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with graph data models.

Responsibilities

  • Own the technical architecture for Planning services, including data models, plan generation, scenario and what-if runs, plan versioning, and reconciliation.
  • Build pipelines that bring orders, inventory, bills of materials, production schedules, and shipment data from ERP, MES, PLM, and TMS sources into the planning model.
  • Productionize forecasting and optimization models developed with AI scientists, including solver integration, scheduling of plan runs, and monitoring.
  • Design Planning to scale across large multi-level bills of materials, many SKUs and sites, and plans that refresh in minutes rather than overnight.
  • Model planning entities and their relationships in the Computational Knowledge Graph so supply issues can be traced to affected orders and production.
  • Work with the agent team to enable AI agents to explain plans, flag exceptions, and recommend actions.
  • Turn customer-specific planning work into reusable product components.
  • Lead and grow a team of engineers; set priorities, review designs and code, and mentor team members.
  • Partner with the Planning product manager on roadmap, scope, and release planning.
  • Own quality, performance, and reliability for Planning in production.
  • Work with forward-deployed teams on customer go-lives and escalations.
