Summary The Engineering Lead is responsible for leading the design of overhead and underground distribution projects for utilities and Customers located in Ontario and Alberta. The Engineering Lead is responsible for the accuracy and quality and constructability of designs, calculations and estimates work for small, mid-sized and large-scale infrastructure projects. Effective collaboration and communication with multiple internal and external stakeholders are required by the Design Lead to progress designs through all project stages. The Engineering Lead contributes to distribution bid proposals, estimates and material calculations and is responsible for the accuracy and quality of designs and quoted work. The Engineering Lead is responsible for handover of high-quality design packages to the customer or project team on schedule and is responsible for resolving design related issues and field level questions while projects are underway. The Engineering Lead needs to work closely with team members and project management to ensure all design/build projects are profitable and delivered on time.

Requirements

  • A Bachelors degree in Engineering or a Technical Diploma in Engineering Technology.
  • Registration as a P.Eng or PL.Eng with PEO is required.
  • 5+ years experience working in an electrical engineering environment, with extensive experience in design and cost estimating and project management of electrical distribution projects
  • Experienced with SPIDA-CALC
  • Ability to effectively lead, train and provide mentorship to other design and drafting professionals.
  • Advanced experience in managing multiple proposals, estimates and designs at the same time.
  • Ability to create, review and authenticate engineering drawings and design information according to established standards and procedures.
  • Capable of developing estimates based on drawings and scopes of work.
  • Subject matter expert in high voltage design and construction including applicable electrical codes, standards, and specifications.
  • Ability to read and comprehend electrical and construction plans from utilities, customers, and consultants.
  • Proficient in using estimating, design, and project related software such as MicroStation, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and SPIDA-CALC.
  • Superior ability to meet tight deadlines and multi-task.
  • Able to develop project schedules based on proposal details.
  • Capacity to resolve complex issues in a timely manner.
  • Ability to build relationships with clients, consultants, approval authorities and utility representatives.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain customer relationships while identifying and supporting and establishing new opportunities and business lines.
  • Understanding of project financial accounting and controls including change management processes and the creation of change orders.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Leading the design of overhead and underground distribution projects for utilities and Customers located in Ontario and Alberta.
  • Ensuring the accuracy, quality, and constructability of designs, calculations, and estimates for infrastructure projects.
  • Collaborating and communicating effectively with multiple internal and external stakeholders to progress designs through all project stages.
  • Contributing to distribution bid proposals, estimates, and material calculations.
  • Handing over high-quality design packages to the customer or project team on schedule.
  • Resolving design-related issues and field-level questions while projects are underway.
  • Working closely with team members and project management to ensure design/build projects are profitable and delivered on time.
  • Prepare quotations and proposals using standard templates, processes and procedures.
  • Manage client/program workload to ensure accurate resource planning, and consistently delivery of high-quality work on schedule and budget.
  • Compile project BOM’s based on drawings, specifications, codes, and standards to be submitted to procurement for purchasing.
  • Prepare accurate estimates of costs of materials, labor, and equipment for construction projects based on contract bids, quotations, schematic drawings, and specifications.
  • Analyze customer plans and utility documentation to develop distribution project proposals, preliminary designs, and schedules.
  • Utilize SPIDA-CALD, AutoCAD, MicroStation, Bluebeam or other design software to prepare designs from conceptual stage through to IFC.
  • Submission of design packages for client approval.
  • Obtain all necessary permits, agreements and design approvals required for project execution including line assignments, crossing and proximity agreements, environmental approvals, utility design approvals as well as project related client contractual and financial related documents.
  • Perform engineering calculations such as pole line analysis, pulling tension calculations etc.
  • Collaborate with design consultants and utilities.
  • Facilitate or attend various external site and project related meetings.
  • Facilitate or attend all internal project meetings such as project handoff, kick-offs, and reviews.
  • Monitor project budget, costs, and scope.
  • Follow change control processes and issue change orders as required.
  • Collaborate with Project Management to prevent and resolve issues and ensure that design related issues are prioritized and resolved quickly to maintain schedules and prevent work stoppages or downtime for construction crews.
  • Identify resources and requirements necessary for IPS to effectively design specific distribution business lines.
  • Collaborate with applicable IPS staff and teams to establish, document, and implement design related processes and procedures and obtain resources for design related projects and programs, (including software, hardware, insurance, licensing, and staff).
  • Other duties as required.
