About The Position

The Engineering Level 2 Internship is part of the SFMTA Planning and Engineering Internship Program. Interns may be placed in the Streets Division or Transit Division, with assignments varying by team. Streets Division work may include developing transportation project design alternatives, field visits, preparing traffic-control work orders and striping drawings, drafting in AutoCAD, estimating costs, analyzing signal timing, reviewing construction work zones and site plans, supporting public outreach, and preparing legislation. Transit Division interns may support evaluation of the E-bus pilot program or work with the Train Control Upgrade Project (TCUP), gaining exposure to transit engineering, fleet electrification, rail systems, project management, and data analytics through technical studies, performance evaluations, system testing, documentation, and project coordination. The program includes mandatory seminars and field trips, as well as PechaKucha presentations at the end of the summer. The role follows a 40-hour work week, generally Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Work outside these hours may be required for fieldwork or outreach events. Interns may be eligible for a flexible schedule with supervisor and division approval and may work up to 1,040 hours in a fiscal year. Most positions end at summer’s end; some may continue into the school year with approval. The environment is hybrid and traditional, and interns may be expected to work onsite up to five days a week. Interns must be based in the Bay Area for the duration of the internship.
