About The Position

The City of Santa Ana is seeking results-oriented individuals with a great attitude, creativity, innovation, efficiency, a record of success, and a passion for public service for a part-time internship position. The incumbent will work an average of 19 hours per week, with a flexible work schedule. This recruitment is open until further notice and may close at any time without notice. Requirements

  • Must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate Civil, Electrical, or Pre-Engineering curriculum with a GPA of 2.50 or higher (Sophomore or Junior level preferred).
  • Not open to Graduate/Post-Graduate students for Traffic positions.
  • Must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate Civil/Environmental/Mechanical or Pre-Engineering Program with a GPA of 2.50 or higher (Sophomore or Junior level preferred) for Development/Water Resources.
  • Must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate Civil Engineering or Construction Management Program with a GPA of 2.50 or higher (Sophomore and Junior level preferred) for CIP Engineering.
  • Ample knowledge of computer software such as AutoCAD and/or Microstation and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to work comfortably in a Windows environment.
  • Possession and retention of an appropriate valid driver’s license is a condition of continued employment.
  • References - List names, addresses, and phone numbers of three references, one of which must be a current or former professor.
  • Proof of current school enrollment in an accredited Construction Management/Engineering/Pre-Engineering/Civil/Mechanical/Electrical Engineering curriculum (unofficial transcripts in PDF format listing name, school, major, and current classes).

Responsibilities

  • Serve residents, contractors, developers, utility companies, and other constituents at the Public Works Agency counter.
  • Prepare and modify cost estimate spreadsheets, basic exhibits, and presentations.
  • Conduct data research and field investigations.
  • Receive and distribute plan submittals.
  • Issue construction, transportation, utility, and other permits.
  • Review site plans for basic private developments.
  • Review building plans to calculate development impact fees.
  • Prepare correspondence to permit applicants regarding the status of plan reviews and permit issuance.
  • Perform a variety of general office tasks.
  • Assist engineers in traffic engineering field investigations for existing conditions and proposed projects.
  • Conduct various engineering and warrant studies.
  • Research project records, files, and plans.
  • Prepare/modify plans using Microstation or manual drafting.
  • Use Microsoft Office PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Access, or other tools and databases to prepare presentation materials (maps, charts, spreadsheets, etc.).
  • Perform data entry.
  • Place and retrieve radar trailers.
  • Conduct/evaluate speed studies, pedestrian, and vehicular counts.
  • Update records.
  • Review collision data.
  • Conduct parking surveys.
  • Issue business/resident notices.
  • Make copies, file documents.
  • Work with the public.
  • Work with the signal operations team and equipment.
  • Assist engineers in operating the Traffic Management Center.
  • Maintain local area computer network.
  • Investigate traffic signal operations and complaints.
  • Maintain traffic signal equipment, timing, and maintenance records.
  • Design traffic signals, closed-circuit television, communication systems, and other advanced traffic signal system elements.
  • Update traffic signal plans manually or using CAD.
  • Assist in the collection of field data for Water Resources.
  • Generate technical data, organize documents, and coordinate data transmission.
  • Conduct manufacturer website surveys for engineering drawings and equipment documentation.
  • Scan, record, maintain, and organize directories.
  • Update and create engineering drawings utilizing MicroStation.
  • Assist with the preparation and distribution of reports and documents.
  • Process correspondence and material requisitions.
  • Support the design and/or construction phase of projects in CIP Engineering.
  • Assist with the preparation of engineering drawings and estimates during the design phase.
  • Prepare and modify spreadsheets, project displays, and various reports.
  • Respond to the public and other agencies.
  • Assist with the construction management of projects under the City's capital improvement program.
  • Assist engineering staff during preconstruction and postconstruction activities.
