Requirements

  • Enrolled and pursuing an ABET-accredited Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Nuclear, Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, Electrical, or Industrial & Systems Engineering OR enrolled and pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology or Construction Management.
  • Must not graduate prior to December 2026.
  • Cumulative college GPA of 2.75 or higher.

  • Previous Duke Energy intern/co-op experience
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Demonstrated technical proficiency in use of computers, software, and engineering applications (CAD tools, MFAD, STAAD Pro, MATLAB, PSS/E, Power World)
  • Previous engineering work experience
  • Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide the quantity and quality of work necessary to reach an accomplishment.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities through effective decision making.

  • Ability to deliver superior results within allocated time through effective prioritization, scheduling, planning and execution of assigned work.

Responsibilities

  • Work on real-world projects and learn from experienced engineers.
  • Manage equipment reliability and perform analysis and design of transmission lines and structures, protection and controls systems, and physical/electrical components within Duke Energy’s transmission system (Transmission Engineering).
  • Undertake short-term responsibilities in areas such as electric distribution design, distribution system planning, distribution system operations, distribution asset management, or distribution project management (Distribution Engineering).
  • Manage/maintain equipment, assist with grid planning and sectionalization, complete designs for equipment install/replacement, and provide oversight of the distribution system (Distribution Engineering).
  • Support staff professionals who manage the inspection and oversight of groundwater related environmental projects and components at Duke Energy’s generating stations (Environmental Health and Safety).
  • Provide support of state and federal environmental regulations, permits siting, licensing/relicensing for groundwater and coal ash related work (Environmental Health and Safety).
  • Work on groundwater remediation projects and groundwater monitoring projects (Environmental Health and Safety).
  • Gain experience working on projects for generation facility safety, efficiencies, system performance, reliability, cost, and environmental compliance (Regulated and Renewable Energy).
  • Gain knowledge for plant systems engineering and maintenance and energy production including pumps, motors, control systems, heat performance, motors, switch gears, turbines, generators, system inspections, calibrations, and equipment performance (Regulated and Renewable Energy).
  • Develop, design, construct, and startup of power generation assets, including renewable solar, bulk energy storage, new simple and combined cycle turbines, and advanced nuclear, pumped storage hydro, and other emerging technologies (Project Management & Construction).
  • Work with NNG on near-term engineering priorities involving front end engineering design (FEED) for the selected SMR technology and site-specific engineering development for the Belews Creek site (New Nuclear Generation).
