About The Position

Actionstep is hiring an Engineering Director to lead development of a greenfield accounting platform for its legal practice management software. The platform is part of the next generation of Actionstep’s product, with AI built in from the start. Accuracy, auditability, and trust are central to the work. Actionstep uses an AI-driven development approach in which AI agents perform much of the coding and testing, while team members define requirements, review the work, and own what ships. This is a hands-on leadership role. The director will build and lead a growing team of engineers, designers, QA professionals, and accounting specialists, while also acting as the team’s engineering manager. The role is based in Denver, Colorado, with a hybrid work arrangement. Actionstep’s platform uses TypeScript services, React micro-frontends, a shared design system, and AWS across multiple regions.

Requirements

Experience leading engineering for financial systems such as accounting, billing, or payments, including regulated or audited money flows.
Experience taking a new platform from its first commit to paying customers while maintaining a realistic delivery plan.
Experience building and operating multi-tenant SaaS products.
Experience leading adoption of AI-driven development in an engineering organization, with measurable evidence of the changes; uses AI coding tools and has led a team that builds with them.
Experience leading distributed teams across time zones, including contractors.
Ability to communicate trade-offs and delivery risks clearly to senior executives.
Ability to make sound decisions with incomplete information and change course when data supports doing so.
Ability to explain complex technical trade-offs simply to executive and non-technical colleagues.

Responsibilities

Own delivery planning, communicate progress and trade-offs, and clearly explain risks to the executive team.
Set technical direction with the tech lead and senior engineers, including decisions about safe AI-agent use with financial data.
Lead and improve the spec-driven, AI-first development process, measuring its effectiveness and making it faster over time.
Hire and grow the team and establish the standards it works to.
Coordinate scope and delivery dates with dependent teams, including permissions, approvals, and workflow teams.
Lead through managers and tech leads and raise the hiring bar.
Coach and develop engineers and engineering managers.
Build trust across teams, functions, and time zones, and maintain a high bar for quality while owning outcomes.
Undertake other reasonable duties as required.
