About The Position

The Engineering Automation Systems Specialist is responsible for supporting, maintaining, and improving the software systems used by Smardt’s engineering departments. These systems include configurable Autodesk Inventor assemblies, iLogic automation, Inventor add-ins, standalone engineering applications, SQL-backed systems, standard-parts libraries, document-generation tools, and AI-assisted engineering applications. The primary purpose of the role is to ensure that existing engineering automation systems remain reliable, properly supported, and effectively used by employees. The position investigates reported software issues, reproduces and documents defects, coordinates or implements corrective actions, trains users, gathers structured feedback, and identifies opportunities to improve system usability and performance. The role acts as a key connection between engineering users and the Engineering Systems & Automation function. It ensures that user needs, recurring problems, adoption barriers, and improvement requests are documented, prioritized, and communicated. The position may also contribute to software testing, configuration, documentation, minor enhancements, and the development of new engineering automation solutions under the direction of the Manager, Engineering Systems & Automation. This role is 100% on site and you'll be expected to work on a daily basis, side-by-side, with your team.

Requirements

  • Bilingual (English/French)
  • Working knowledge of Autodesk Inventor, iLogic, or CAD automation.
  • Knowledge of VB.NET, C#, or a similar programming language.
  • Working knowledge of SQL and relational databases.
  • Ability to test software changes and document defects clearly.
  • Ability to create user guides and deliver technical training.
  • Familiarity with version control and issue-tracking systems.

  • Min. bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science or equivalent
  • Minimum 1-5 years’ experience programming
  • Minimum of 1-3 years’ experience in HVAC or Refrigeration
  • Experience supporting and troubleshooting engineering software.

Nice To Haves

  • Understanding of engineering drawings, BOMs, and configurable products is an asset.
  • Experience with Inventor API, Vault, AI tools, or standard-parts libraries is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Support engineering users and troubleshoot issues with automation systems and applications.
  • Investigate, document, prioritize, and follow up on software defects and support requests.
  • Resolve assigned bugs and escalate complex issues when required.
  • Train employees and prepare user guides, work instructions, and troubleshooting documentation.
  • Monitor software adoption and help employees use approved tools correctly and consistently.
  • Collect and organize user feedback, enhancement requests, and recurring problems.
  • Maintain a structured backlog of defects, improvements, and development requests.
  • Test software fixes, new releases, and system changes before deployment.
  • Support Inventor assemblies, iLogic rules, add-ins, standalone applications, SQL data, and standard-parts systems.
  • Contribute to minor software improvements and new automation development as assigned.
  • Communicate system performance, adoption issues, and user needs to the Manager, Engineering Systems & Automation
