About The Position

ATTENTION ALL ALASKA RESIDENTS Fairbanks International Airport is seeking a dynamic and experienced engineer to serve as an Engineering Assistant 1/2/3. This is a high-impact role is responsible for assisting the airport engineer and providing support in projects vital to the growth and operations at Fairbanks International Airport. As an Engineering Assistant I, II, or III at Fairbanks International Airport, you will support the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of airport infrastructure by assisting professional engineers with technical tasks such as preparing drawings, performing inspections, conducting surveys, collecting and analyzing data, and reviewing construction documents. Depending on your level, responsibilities may range from performing entry-level drafting, calculations, and fieldwork under close supervision to independently managing assigned project components, coordinating with contractors and stakeholders, and applying engineering judgment, leading more complex projects, providing technical guidance to junior staff, and ensuring compliance with FAA, state, and environmental regulations. Overall, the role provides hands-on experience in civil and transportation engineering within a dynamic airport environment.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of engineering concepts, principles, and practices, and of equipment, tools, mechanical devices, and their uses to produce motion, light, power, technology, and other applications.
  • Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral and written presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.

  • A valid driver’s license is required for this position.
  • Specialized training in computer software including AutoCad, ArcGIS, spreadsheet, word-processor, and project cost estimation.
  • Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from a postsecondary institution accredited by ABET.
  • An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination.
  • One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
  • Five years of progressively responsible subprofessional engineering experience of which two years was as a Journey level Engineering Technician or Drafting Technician 3 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere.
  • Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level.
  • Candidates for this position must be eligible for an airport identification badge in accordance with Transportation Security Administration (TSA) regulations (49 CFR 1542) which requires fingerprinting and a criminal background check.
  • The successful applicant must pass a fingerprint-based criminal history record check as well as a comprehensive background investigation, along with a Transportation Security Administration Security Threat Assessment.

Nice To Haves

  • An applicant who will obtain within nine months a bachelor's degree from an institution accredited by ABET, with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying, will qualify to apply.
  • Graduate study in engineering and/or architecture may be substituted for the required experience as an Engineering Assistant 1.
  • Graduate study in engineering or architecture may be substituted for the required experience.
